Chapter 3 - The War Begins

Within ten minutes, the former Chairman of Callahan Global Holdings was publicly escorted out of his own skyscraper by his own security team. The news sent immediate shockwaves through the upper echelons of Chicago’s elite.
Inside the office, the storm had settled into a quiet, heavy reality.
Lily had woken up and was sitting on Ethan's lap, drinking milk from her bottle while staring at his shiny silver watch. Ethan looked down at her with an intensity that frightened me—not because it was hostile, but because it was fiercely protective.
"You can't stay at your apartment tonight, Clara," Ethan said, holding Lily’s tiny hand in his broad palm. "My father is a desperate man. When the Sterling merger collapses because of this, he will use every illegal resource he has to erase Caleb’s legal heirs."
"Legal heirs?" I asked, sitting across from him. "Ethan, I don't want his money. I just wanted to know why Caleb left me. Now that I know... I just want Lily to be safe."
"She is the heir," Ethan stated firmly. "Caleb owned twenty-five percent of Callahan Global Holdings in a private trust created by our late mother. My father couldn't touch those shares while Caleb was alive. But if Caleb has a legitimate blood child, those shares pass directly to Lily."
He looked into my eyes with total sincerity. "My father didn't just hide Caleb’s death to avoid a scandal. He hid it so he could illegally vote with Caleb’s shares to maintain control of the board. Lily isn't just my niece, Clara. She is the rightful owner of this company."
Before I could process the magnitude of what he was saying, Ethan stood up and grabbed his coat.
"We are going to my estate in Lake Forest. It’s fortified, private, and secure. My legal team and forensic accountants are already meeting us there."
Over the next three days, Ethan’s estate became the war room for the biggest corporate battle Chicago had seen in a decade. While legal teams worked around the clock analyzing forged documents and illegal bank transfers, Ethan did something no one at Callahan Global would ever believe.
Every evening at seven o'clock, regardless of how many lawyers were sitting in his study, Ethan stepped away from his work. He learned how to prepare Lily’s bedtime formula, read her storybooks about trains, and gently rocked her to sleep in his arms.
Watching him with her, the terrifying, cold billionaire dissolved. I saw the loving older brother Caleb used to talk about—the man who had carried the weight of his entire family on his shoulders for far too long.
On the fourth morning, Marcus, Ethan’s lead corporate attorney, slammed a leather binder onto the dining room table.
"We found it, Ethan," Marcus said, his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. "Victor didn't just forge Caleb’s signature to vote with his shares. He used shell accounts in the Cayman Islands to siphon forty million dollars from Caleb's trust fund directly into his personal legal defense funds."
Ethan took a slow sip of his coffee, his expression turning to stone. "Issue an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning at nine. Invite the press, the Sterling Group, and the District Attorney's office."

"What are you going to do?" I asked, holding Lily tightly in my arms.
Ethan looked at us both, a soft, resolute smile touching his lips. "I am going to finish what my brother started."
