Chapter 3 - The Threat and the Trap

Arthur’s breath hitched in his throat. For a fraction of a second, panic—pure, primal panic—threatened to paralyze him. But he was a father first, and the instinct to protect his daughter instantly overrode his fear.
He drew the heavy, blackout curtains closed with a violent tug, blocking the sniper’s line of sight. He rushed to the bed, gently scooped Zoe up into his arms, and carried her into the master bathroom, which had no windows and was surrounded by thick, reinforced concrete walls.
Zoe mumbled, her eyes fluttering open slightly. "Daddy? Are we playing the fort game again?"
"Yes, princess," Arthur whispered, kissing her forehead. "Just like the fort game. You sleep right here on this nice pile of blankets, okay? Daddy is just going to finish some work."
"Okay..." she murmured, immediately drifting back to sleep, comforted by her father's calm demeanor.
Arthur walked back into the living room, his face a mask of cold fury. Ava was cowering near the sofa, having realized what was happening.
He picked up the hanging receiver of the landline. "Richard."
"Ah, you're still there," Richard said, his voice dripping with satisfaction. "I assume you've taken Zoe to safety. Good. I have no desire to hurt the girl, Arthur. But I will do whatever is necessary to protect my interests. You have exactly twelve hours. By 10:00 AM tomorrow, the board of directors will convene for an emergency vote. You will sign over your controlling shares of the Johnson Group to me, citing personal reasons and a desire to retire. If you do, you and your daughter fly back to London, wealthy and alive. If you don't..."
"You think a sniper in the middle of Manhattan is going to get away with this?" Arthur spat.
"In my world, Arthur, everyone has a price," Richard replied. "The local precinct captain? Paid off. The security team at your hotel? Under my payroll. You are completely isolated. Do not play the hero. You have until tomorrow morning."
The line went dead.
Arthur stood in the quiet suite, his mind working at lightning speed. He looked at Ava. "How deep does this go? Who else on the board is with Richard?"
"At least three others," Ava said, her voice shaking. "Marcus Vance, Elena Rostova, and David Cho. They hold thirty percent of the shares combined. If you sign over your forty-five percent, Richard will have absolute control."
"And the remaining twenty-five percent?"
"They are held by small public investors and your father's old friends," Ava said. "But they will follow whoever has the majority."
Arthur walked to the window, peering through a tiny slit in the curtain. He could see the sniper was still there, a silent sentinel of death. Richard thought he had trapped him. He thought that by threatening Zoe, Arthur would fold.
But Richard had made one fatal mistake. He had forgotten who Arthur’s father was.
Marcus Johnson hadn't just built hotels; he had built a network of intelligence, trust, and secret contingencies. When Arthur took over, he didn't just inherit the buildings; he inherited his father's private security protocols—a shadow network known only as "The Foundation."
Arthur pulled out his personal, heavily encrypted satellite phone. He dialed a number he hadn't called in five years.
The call connected on the first ring.
"Speak," a gravelly voice ordered.
"This is Arthur," he said. "The Crown Jewel is compromised. I need a shadow sweep, immediate extraction protocols, and a full forensic digital lock on the system. Code: Red Legacy."
There was a brief pause on the other end. "Copy that, Mr. Johnson. We are twenty minutes away. Stay low."
Arthur hung up and looked at Ava. "Ava, do you want to redeem yourself?"
May you like
She looked up, her eyes wide. "Yes. Please. I never wanted any of this."
"Then you are going to help me set a trap."
