Chapter 4 - The Web Unravels

By the next afternoon, the Vance Estate had transformed into a command center for a high-stakes corporate and criminal takedown.

In the grand library, three top criminal prosecutors, two forensic accountants, and Julian’s chief legal strategist were huddled over stacks of bank statements, property deeds, and medical records seized from Victoria Sterling’s private quarters.

Julian stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, a glass of untouched bourbon in his hand, watching the rain beat against the glass.

“It’s worse than we thought, Mr. Vance,” said Arthur Pendelton, Julian’s veteran legal council. He laid out a complex organizational chart on the large oak desk. “Victoria didn't act alone. This was a multi-tiered conspiracy designed to systematically dismantle your family's wealth and authority.”

Julian didn't turn around. “Explain.”

“Four years ago, right before Mrs. Vance vanished, Victoria and her brother, Dr. Sterling, set up a shell company in the Cayman Islands,” Pendelton explained, tapping a paper with his pen. “They began siphoning small amounts from Clara’s personal trust fund. But when Clara discovered the discrepancies, she confronted Victoria. That was the night she disappeared.”

Julian’s jaw tightened. “They didn't kidnap her to steal her money after the fact. They kidnapped her because she caught them stealing.”

“Precisely,” Pendelton nodded. “Instead of murdering her—which would have triggered an immediate murder investigation and a massive police dragnet—they staged a missing persons scenario. Victoria used her position as your trusted cousin to manage the search efforts, intentionally feeding false leads to your private investigators to keep you searching overseas.”

“While keeping her right under my roof,” Julian whispered, his voice trembling with quiet fury.

“Yes,” Pendelton continued. “Over the last four years, using forged power-of-attorney documents signed by Dr. Sterling certifying Clara’s mental incompetence, Victoria managed to transfer nearly forty percent of Clara’s inheritance into offshore accounts. She was planning to execute a final transfer next month—a buyout of your family’s majority shares in Vance Enterprises.”

The door to the library opened softly.

Julian turned to see Clara standing in the doorway. She was wearing a soft, warm cashmere sweater and loose trousers. Though she still looked frail, her hair was washed and brushed, and she walked with a quiet, fragile dignity. Two female security guards stood respectfully a few steps behind her.

Julian immediately set his glass down and rushed to her side, taking her cold hands in his. “Clara, what are you doing out of bed? You need rest.”

“I’m done resting, Julian,” Clara said, her voice firmer than it had been the day before. She looked at the papers spread across the oak desk, her dark eyes flashing with cold intelligence. “I heard what you were talking about.”

She walked slowly into the room, leaning lightly on Julian’s arm for support. She pointed directly at the organizational chart on the desk.

“Victoria didn't just use her brother,” Clara said, her voice steady. “There is someone else. Someone higher up in the city government who cleared the medical certificates and blocked the police reports whenever your investigators got too close.”

Pendelton looked surprised. “Who, Mrs. Vance?”

Clara looked directly into Julian’s eyes. “District Attorney Robert Vance... your uncle.”

The room went dead silent.

Julian felt a cold chill run down his spine. Uncle Robert—the powerful, highly respected politician who had sat at Julian’s dinner table every Christmas, who had held Julian’s hand at his mother’s funeral, and who had repeatedly advised Julian to "let Clara go and move on with his life."

“Robert...” Julian muttered, the betrayal striking him like a physical blow.

Clara took a deep breath, reaching into her sweater pocket and pulling out a small, folded piece of yellowed paper. “When they kept me down there, Harrison used to leave his jacket on the chair while he watched me eat. One night, he forgot his phone on the table. I couldn't unlock it, but I saw a incoming text message pop up on the screen.”

She unfolded the paper, reading the words she had memorized over two years ago: ‘Keep her hidden. Julian is getting suspicious again. If she talks, we all go down. - R.V.’

Julian stared at the note, his eyes blazing with a dangerous, lethal light. The final piece of the puzzle had fallen into place. It wasn't just a bitter cousin seeking revenge; it was a cabal of his own blood relatives attempting to steal his legacy and destroy his life from the inside out.

Julian reached out, taking the paper from Clara’s hands, kissing her cheek softly.

“You did so well, my brave girl,” he whispered. He looked up at Pendelton and Marcus. “Cancel the private arrests. We aren't handling this behind closed doors anymore.”

Pendelton raised an eyebrow. “What are you planning, Mr. Vance?”

May you like

Julian smiled, a cold, predatory expression that chilled everyone in the room. “Uncle Robert is hosting his annual political fundraising gala at the Metropolitan Hotel tonight. The city’s elite, the press, and the police commissioner will all be there.”

He looked at Clara, offering her his arm. “It’s time my wife made her official return to society.”
