Chapter 2 - The Cage in the East Wing

Victoria gasped in pain as Julian’s fingers gripped her wrist, forcing her to drop the champagne glass. The crystal shattered on the stone steps, sending glittering shards and sparkling wine over her designer shoes.

“Julian! Have you lost your mind?” Victoria shrieked, her regal composure shattering into frantic outrage. “How dare you touch me! I kept this family together while you were losing your head over a ghost!”

“You didn't keep it together,” Julian growled, his voice dropping an octave into a terrifying rumble. He didn't pull her down the stairs; he simply held her pinned in place, his presence overwhelming her completely. “You built a prison inside my house.”

He snapped his fingers without turning around. From the heavy oak entrance doors, four large men in dark, tactical suits materialized. They were Julian’s personal protection detail, men who answered only to him and his black-card payroll.

“Marcus,” Julian barked to the lead security operative. “Lock down the perimeter. Nobody enters, nobody leaves. Seize all electronic devices from every staff member. If anyone tries to contact the outside world, detain them.”

“Understood, Mr. Vance,” Marcus replied smoothly, drawing a sidearm and gesturing for his men to take control of the foyer exits.

Julian finally let go of Victoria’s wrist with a flick of his arm, pushing her back against the gilded handrail. He turned his back on her entirely, kneeling down into the spilled tea on the mahogany floor, uncaring that his thousand-dollar trousers were being ruined.

He reached out gently, his hands trembling as he hovered over Clara’s small, frail shoulders. “Clara... my sweet girl...”

Clara flinched instinctively at the sudden movement, flinching backward as if expecting a blow. The sight tore through Julian’s heart like a serrated blade.

“It's me,” he whispered, tears finally streaming down his face. “It’s Julian. You’re safe now. I swear to God, no one will ever hurt you again.”

Clara looked up at him, her dark eyes wide and glossy. For four years, she had been beaten down, isolated, and told every single day that Julian had abandoned her, that he had given up looking for her, and that Victoria was now the rightful mistress of the Vance empire. She had been kept in a windowless room beneath the east wing, drugged, starved, and forced to work under threat of death if she ever spoke a word.

“Julian...?” she breathed, her voice cracking with disuse. She reached out a cut, trembling hand, pressing her bloodied fingers against his cheek. “Is it... really you?”

“It’s me, my love,” Julian sobbed, pulling her gently into his arms. He buried his face in her hair, ignoring the smell of cheap lye soap, holding her tightly against his chest as if trying to merge their bodies so she could never be taken again. “I never stopped looking. Not for a single day.”

Clara burst into deep, agonizing sobs, burying her face into his expensive wool coat, her fingers clutching his lapels with terrifying strength.

Victoria, standing on the stairs, sneered despite her growing panic. “You think you can just arrest me, Julian? I have power of attorney! I have signed documents! Clara was declared legally insane three years ago after she tried to burn down the library! I did you a favor by keeping her hidden so your stock prices wouldn't plunge!”

Julian stood up slowly, lifting Clara effortlessly into his arms. Though she was a grown woman, she felt impossibly light, like a bundle of dry twigs.

He glared up at Victoria with eyes that promised total annihilation. “Every lie you have told, every document you have forged, and every strike you laid upon my wife will be paid back a thousand times over, Victoria. I will not just send you to prison. I will strip your family name from the registry, destroy every financial asset you possess, and ensure you spend the rest of your natural life in a concrete cell.”

He looked at Marcus. “Take her to the study. Lock her inside. If she tries to break a window, drop her.”

“Julian! You can’t do this! I am a Sterling!” Victoria screamed as Marcus and another armed operative grabbed her arms, dragging her up the stairs despite her kicks and shrieks. Her expensive dress tore against the banister as she was marched away, her dignified façade completely obliterated.

Julian turned away from her screams, carrying Clara down the long, vaulted corridor toward the master wing. The remaining household staff backed away against the walls, trembling, terrified of the reckoning that was inevitably coming for all of them.

As he carried her into their old master bedroom—a room he had kept locked and untouched for four years—he laid her down gently on the soft, velvet-covered king bed.

Clara looked around the room, her eyes taking in the familiar paintings, the photograph of their wedding day on the nightstand, and the large windows overlooking the manicured gardens.

“They... they told me you hated me,” Clara whispered, her body trembling under the soft duvet Julian wrapped around her. “Victoria showed me forged letters... she said you agreed to keep me locked away in the basement so you could take my inheritance...”

Julian sat on the edge of the bed, taking her hands in his, kissing every bruised knuckle. “She lied to you, Clara. She poisoned us both. But it’s over now. The nightmare is over.”

Clara squeezed his hand, her gaze drifting toward the locked door of the east wing visible from the balcony window. “It’s not over, Julian,” she murmured, a dark shadow passing over her face. “You don't know what she built down there. You don't know who else was helping her.”
