Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

The revelation struck the wedding crowd like a physical earthquake.

Gasps turned into full-blown commotion. Several prominent CEOs who had been sitting in the front rows immediately stood up, pulled out their encrypted phones, and began frantically shouting orders to their brokers to dump Montgomery Global stock before the markets opened on Monday.

"Caroline!" Senator Hastings yelled, grabbing his daughter’s hand with rough urgency. "We're leaving! Now!"

"Dad! What about the wedding?!" Caroline cried, her veil tearing on a rose bush as her father dragged her back toward the mansion doors.

"There is no wedding!" Senator Hastings snarled, throwing a hateful glare at Eleanor. "This family is financially ruined! I’m not tying my political career to a sinking ship of fraud and illegitimate debt!"

Within five minutes, the fairy-tale wedding of the decade turned into a chaotic stampede. High-society guests rushed toward the valet stand, pushing past one another to reach their limousines. The string quartet packed up their instruments in silence. The catering staff stood near the champagne towers, completely bewildered as the grand celebration emptied into a barren ghost town.

Only five people remained standing on the vast, flower-strewn lawn: Ethan, Eleanor, myself, and my three sons.

"Sienna..." Ethan stepped forward, his eyes glossy with unshed tears, looking down at Noah and Caleb, who were now standing close to my legs, watching him with quiet, observant eyes. "Please... talk to me. Five years... you let me believe you walked away. You let me believe you didn't want the life we talked about..."

"I didn't walk away from our life, Ethan," I said, my voice dropping into a soft, piercing tone. "I ran for my life. Your mother hired private investigators to track my medical records. When my pregnancy test came back positive at the clinic downtown, she had her lawyers draft a custody petition to declare me an unfit mother on mental health grounds before the boys were even born."

Ethan snapped his head toward his mother, his expression turning terrifyingly dark. "What?"

"She's lying, Ethan!" Eleanor screamed, though her frantic eyes betrayed her terror. "She’s inventing stories to turn you against your own blood! I only ever protected you! I built this family name!"

"You didn't build this family name, Eleanor," I corrected coldly. "You nearly destroyed it. Over the last four years, while I was working twenty-hour days building Vanguard Global from a two-room office, you were using Montgomery Global funds to pay off your personal gambling debts at the casinos in Macau and Monte Carlo. Eighteen million dollars, Eleanor. All documented in the forensic audit Vanguard conducted last month."

Eleanor took two steps back, her foot catching on the hem of her designer gown. She collapsed onto a plush white velvet bench, clutching her chest, her breathing coming in ragged, shallow gasps.

"Ethan..." Eleanor whimpered, reaching her trembling, jewel-encrusted hand toward her son. "Call Dr. Harrison... my heart... I'm having an attack..."

Ethan didn't move. He didn't reach for his phone. He stood frozen on the lawn, looking at his mother as if seeing a complete stranger for the very first time in his life.

"You took my children from me," Ethan whispered, his voice dangerously low, a dark rage finally breaking through his quiet persona. "For five years... I lived in this empty house believing Sienna abandoned me. I married a woman I didn't love because you told me it was the only way to save the company... and the entire time, you were stealing from us and hiding my sons?"

"Ethan, listen to me—" Eleanor tried to speak.

"Shut up!" Ethan roared, his voice echoing across the empty lakefront. "Shut your mouth, Mother!"

He turned slowly back to me, his shoulders slumped in total, devastating defeat. He looked at Liam, Noah, and Caleb.

"Sienna..." Ethan begged, falling to his knees once more in front of us, tears pouring down his face onto his pristine tuxedo. "I know I don't deserve your forgiveness. I know I was weak. I was a coward for not looking into your eyes five years ago... But please... let me know my sons. Let me be their father."

Liam looked down at Ethan, then turned his small face up to look at me.

"Mama," Liam asked softly, his little fingers tightening around mine. "Are we going home now?"

I looked down at Ethan—the powerful heir of the Montgomery empire, now broken, weeping, and utterly ruined at my feet.

"We are going home, Liam," I said gently, kissing the top of my eldest son's head.

I looked at Ethan one last time. "My lawyers will serve the Vanguard acquisition papers at your corporate office on Monday morning at 9:00 AM, Ethan. If you want to see your sons... you will show up to that meeting alone. Without your mother. And without your lies."

I turned on my heel, my emerald train sweeping across the fallen white roses, and walked back toward the waiting line of black SUVs with my three boys held safely in my arms.
