Chapter 2 - The Contract on Table Twenty-Seven

Liam’s seven words hit Ethan with the force of a physical blow. The groom flinched on his knees, his jaw quivering as he stared into the face of his eldest son.

"Liam..." Ethan choked out, reaching a trembling hand toward the boy's shoulder. "No... no, I didn't forget you... I didn't know... Sienna, why didn't you tell me?!"

"You didn't ask, Ethan," I replied, standing tall over him, my emerald gown catching the afternoon light. "Five years ago, when your mother handed me the divorce papers in the hospital hallway while I was recovering from an early stress-induced miscarriage scare, you were in Paris attending an auction. You signed the final decree on a digital tablet without making a single phone call to me."

"I was told you took a settlement!" Ethan yelled, tears finally spilling down his cheeks, completely oblivious to the hundreds of high-society guests recording every second of his breakdown. "My mother told me you accepted five million dollars to walk away and never contact the family again!"

"Five million dollars?" I let out a soft, cold laugh. "I left your estate with two suitcases, my personal laptop, and twenty-four hundred dollars in my savings account. Your mother threatened to use her political connections to file fraudulent embezzlement charges against my father’s small logistics firm if I didn't sign the non-disclosure agreement."

"That's a lie!" Eleanor roared as she marched down the marble steps, her diamond necklace bouncing violently against her chest. She pushed past the whispering guests, her eyes blazing with murderous fury. "She’s a gold-digger! A penniless mechanic’s daughter who tried to bleed this family dry five years ago! She’s come here today with illegitimate bastards to extort us on the day of my son’s alliance with the Hastings family!"

"Watch your mouth, Eleanor," I said, my tone dropping into an octave of lethal authority that made the surrounding crowd go dead silent. "My sons are legitimate. We were legally married in Cook County six years ago. They were conceived three months before your fraudulent divorce decree was stamped by a bribed family court judge—a judge who, if I recall correctly, was forced to resign last year under federal indictment."

Eleanor stopped two feet away, her chest heaving. "It doesn't matter! The Montgomery Trust explicitly states that any heir born outside the main estate without approval of the Board of Trustees is disinherited! You have nothing! You are nothing!"

"Is that so?"

I reached into my crocodile leather clutch bag and pulled out a single thick document bound in gold thread. I didn't hand it to Eleanor. I handed it directly to Senator Hastings, who had walked down to the lawn, his face dark as a thundercloud.

"What is this?" Senator Hastings demanded, snatching the paper.

"That is a certified copy of the Montgomery Family Foundation's original 1928 charter," I explained, turning so every guest could hear me clearly. "Drafted by Ethan’s great-grandfather. Section Nine, Paragraph Four: 'The first-born male issue of the reigning family head holds absolute, non-revocable veto power over all corporate land sales, mergers, and family trust liquidations upon reaching their fourth birthday.'"

I patted Liam’s shoulder gently.

"Liam turned four years old three weeks ago," I continued softly. "Which means, Senator Hastings... the sixty-percent stake in Montgomery Global Logistics that Ethan promised as your daughter’s marriage dowry? It cannot be legally transferred. Not without my son’s signature."

Senator Hastings dropped the document. He turned a terrifying, crimson glare onto Ethan and Eleanor.

"You told me the trust was fully under your control, Eleanor!" the Senator barked, his voice booming across the estate. "You told me the corporate restructure was finalized!"

"It... it is finalized!" Eleanor stammered, her composure shattering into a thousand pieces as she grabbed the Senator’s arm. "Arthur, please! This woman is bluffing! She’s an independent contractor running a tiny digital agency! She doesn't have the legal power to freeze our assets!"

"She's not running a tiny agency, Mother," Ethan whispered, slowly standing up from the grass, his face pale as death as he stared at me. He had finally noticed the logo embossed on the side of my security team’s vehicles—the interlocking silver emblem of Vanguard Global Media.

Ethan looked at me, his eyes wide with a horrifying realization. "You... you're 'S.L. Sterling'?"

May you like

"Who is S.L. Sterling?!" Eleanor shrieked.

"S.L. Sterling is the majority shareholder of Vanguard Global," Ethan said, his voice trembling so hard his teeth clicked. "The firm that acquired seventy percent of our corporate debt from Deutsche Bank last Tuesday... She doesn't just own fourteen percent of our land, Mother. She owns our entire mortgage."
