Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Three days later, our lives had changed so drastically it felt like living inside a movie.

We weren't in the cramped apartment on Aldridge Street anymore. We were living in the East Wing of the Graves estate—a sprawling limestone mansion surrounded by iron gates, manicured gardens, and twenty-four-hour armed security patrols.

My mother was recovering rapidly under the care of a private medical staff, her color returning, her smile brighter than I had ever seen it.

Yet, beneath the luxurious surface of the estate, a quiet, deadly tension hung in the air.

On the fourth night, I was sitting in the grand library, flipping through an enormous picture book about art history, when I overheard raised voices coming from Nathaniel’s private study down the hall.

The heavy oak door was cracked open an inch.

"Julian Moreau has crossed the line," Marcus’s voice cut through the quiet air, hard and sharp. "His enforcers didn't just back down at the hospital. Last night, they torched one of our secondary shipping warehouses down by the docks. Three million dollars in cargo gone up in smoke."

I froze, holding my breath, my fingers gripping the pages of my book.

Inside the study, Nathaniel didn't raise his voice. When he spoke, his tone was so dangerously calm it sent a chill down my spine.

"Julian wants a war," Nathaniel said, the sound of a heavy glass tumbler setting down on a wooden desk punctuating his words. "He thinks because I spent the last week focusing on my family, my grip on the city has slipped. He thinks my granddaughter and my daughter are vulnerabilities."

"What are your orders, boss?" Marcus asked.

"Gather the board of capos," Nathaniel instructed coldly. "Tell them to liquidate our holdings in Moreau’s primary banking sectors. By morning, I want his legitimate front companies frozen by federal regulators, his shipping lanes blocked by our private coast guard fleet, and his primary lieutenants cut off from their payroll."

"And Moreau himself?" Marcus pressed.

"Leave him to me," Nathaniel said. "I’m going to pay him a personal visit. It's time the younger generation learned why the name Graves has ruled this city for forty years before they were even born."

I backed away from the door silently, my heart hammering against my ribs. The fairy tale of the rich grandfather and the lost wallet was colliding head-on with the bloody reality of the mafia empire he commanded.
