Chapter 2 - The Shadow of the Past

Within twenty minutes of Nathaniel’s orders, Graves Tower had transformed from a corporate skyscraper into a staging ground for a military operation.

Marcus led me away from the main lobby, bypassing the public elevators and guiding me into a private, wood-paneled executive suite on the forty-fifth floor. The room was larger than our entire apartment, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the sprawling concrete jungle of Chicago, a massive mahogany desk, and leather furniture that looked like it belonged in a museum.

Nathaniel sat across from me at a small glass coffee table, while a nurse—summoned by private helicopter within ten minutes—carefully checked my pulse, took my temperature, and handed me a warm cup of hot cocoa laced with marshmallows.

"Drink it slowly, sweetheart," Nathaniel instructed, watching me with an intensity that made me feel like I was under a microscope. "You're safe here. No one is ever going to put an eviction notice on your door again. Do you hear me?"

I sipped the cocoa, the rich sweetness warming my empty stomach, though my mind was still spinning. "Are you... are you really my grandfather?"

Nathaniel’s expression tightened, a shadow passing over his storm-gray eyes. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, worn photograph—the edges frayed from being handled a million times. He slid it across the glass table toward me.

In the picture, a young woman with dark hair and bright, defiant eyes was laughing while standing beside a younger, much sterner-looking Nathaniel Graves in front of an old cottage by a lake.

"That's your mother, Elena," Nathaniel said quietly. "Fifteen years ago, she and I had a... disagreement. I wanted her to marry into the corporate alliance I was building to secure the family's empire. She had different ideas. She wanted a normal life, away from the violence, the money, and the blood that built Graves Holdings. She walked out that front door, and pride kept me from chasing her. I spent years looking, but she hid too well."

"Mom never talked about you," I whispered, tracing the edge of the photograph with my thumb. "She always said her father was a hard man who loved power more than people."

Nathaniel flinched as if he had been struck. He closed his eyes for a long moment, taking a deep, ragged breath. "She wasn't wrong, Ruby. For most of my life, I believed that power and money were the only things that kept people alive in this city. But looking at you—standing in my lobby with holes in your sneakers, refusing to give up my wallet because it wasn't yours to keep—I realize she didn't just escape my world. She built something infinitely better."

Before I could reply, the heavy mahogany door of the office swung open. Marcus stepped inside, holding a secure encrypted tablet.

"Boss," Marcus said, his voice low and urgent. "The team has secured the building on Aldridge Street. The landlord surrendered the deed without a fight once we wired his corporate accounts seventy thousand dollars. But... we found a complication."

Nathaniel stood up instantly, the gentle grandfather vanishing in a fraction of a second, replaced once again by the ruthless mafia boss who controlled the underworld. "What kind of complication?"

"Elena wasn't there," Marcus reported grimly. "Neighbors said she collapsed about an hour ago from exhaustion and a severe respiratory infection. An ambulance took her to St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital downtown. Our medical transport intercept is already tracking her ambulance, but the hospital is currently sitting in a district controlled by the Moreau syndicate."

The air in the room turned instantly lethal.

The name Moreau seemed to drop the temperature by twenty degrees. Even to an eight-year-old child who only knew scraps of conversation overheard on the evening news, the Moreaus were known as the most violent, unpredictable rival faction in the city—a syndicate that lived for extortion, territorial war, and bloodshed.

Nathaniel’s hands curled into fists so tight his knuckles turned white.

"Get the cars ready," Nathaniel ordered, his voice dropping into an arctic chill. "Mobilize every unit in the third district. If Julian Moreau thinks he can touch a hair on my daughter's head while she’s in a hospital bearing his name, I will burn his entire operation to the ground before the sun sets."
