Chapter 2 - THE CONFRONTATION IN ROOM 412

By 8:00 a.m. the next morning, the sun was rising over the snow-capped peaks of Denver, casting an icy pink glow over the recovery wing of Saint Anthony Medical Center.

The surgical team had completed the painful, complex procedure to separate Kenneth and Maya three hours earlier.

Room 412 smelled heavily of antiseptic and medical adhesive remover. Kenneth lay in the hospital bed on the left, his lower body heavily bandaged, IV lines hooked into his wrists. Maya lay in the bed beside him, staring blankly at the ceiling, her face pale and swollen from hours of crying.

The door swung open.

I walked in, dressed in a sharp white trench coat, holding my leather briefcase. Behind me walked two uniformed Denver Police detectives and Victoria Vance, the lead corporate prosecutor for the State Attorney's Office.

Kenneth shifted uncomfortably, groaning in pain as he looked up. "Sabrina... look, the surgery is over. Can we please talk about this privately now? Tell your brother I’m sorry about Maya, but—"

"Shut your mouth, Kenneth," Victoria Vance interrupted, stepping to the foot of his bed and displaying her official badge. "You are under official state and federal investigation."

Kenneth blinked, his face draining of color. "What? Investigation for what?! An affair isn't illegal!"

"An affair isn't," I said, stepping closer to his bedside table and setting my briefcase down with a loud thud. "But corporate embezzlement of thirty-two million dollars through Cayman shell accounts is."

Maya gasped from her bed, turning her head to stare at Kenneth. "Thirty-two million?!"

"Shut up, Maya!" Kenneth hissed, panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. He turned back to me, trying to force a gentle tone into his voice. "Sabrina, darling... someone is setting me up. You know I love you. You know I built Rollins Global with you—"

"You didn't build anything," I said flatly. I unzipped my briefcase and pulled out the brown paper envelope, tossing the Beverly Hills medical files onto his chest.

Kenneth looked down at the paper. The moment his eyes registered the clinic's logo and the red seal, his breath caught in his throat. His lips began to tremble.

"You knew," I whispered, leaning down so my face was inches from his. "Four years ago. You paid Dr. Richard Sterling two hundred thousand dollars from our corporate slush fund to perform a tubal ligation while I was under for a cyst removal."

Maya sat up in her bed, her eyes wide with shock. "Kenneth... you did what?"

"Sabrina..." Kenneth stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead. "Sabrina, listen to me—the doctor said there were complications—"

"I spoke with Dr. Sterling’s former chief nurse two hours ago," Victoria Vance interjected coldly. "She has already signed a preliminary state affidavit confirming that Kenneth Rollins paid the clinic directly to falsify your emergency consent forms. Dr. Sterling's medical license is being suspended as we speak, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest."

Kenneth looked around the room like a trapped animal. The detectives stepped closer to his bed, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs.

"Kenneth," Maya whimpered, tears pouring down her cheeks. "You told me you loved me! You told me you were going to divorce Sabrina and take me to Paris once you bought out the firm!"

"You stupid bitch!" Kenneth screamed, turning his rage entirely on Maya. "I used you! You think I cared about you? You were just an easy way to spy on Justin’s board votes! You gave me his passwords! You gave me his personal schedules!"

Maya screamed, throwing a plastic water pitcher across the gap between their beds, hitting Kenneth square in the shoulder. "You monster! You ruined my life!"

"I didn't ruin your life, Maya," Justin’s voice echoed from the doorway.

Justin stepped into the room, holding a red folder of his own. He walked over to Maya’s bed, pulled off his gold wedding ring, and tossed it onto her blanket.

"I’ve already filed for an emergency annulment based on fraud and infidelity," Justin said, his voice flat and devoid of any emotion. "And because the house in Cherry Hills was purchased through my inheritance prior to our marriage, you have until noon today to clear your clothes out. My lawyers have already frozen our joint accounts."

"Justin, please!" Maya sobbed, reaching for his hand. "He manipulated me! He threatened to tell you lies about me if I didn't sleep with him!"

"Save it for your divorce attorney, Maya," Justin replied cold-heartedly, turning his back on her.

Detective Miller stepped up to Kenneth’s bed, snapping the first cuff around his right wrist, anchoring him to the hospital bed frame.

"Kenneth Rollins," Detective Miller recited, "you are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate fraud, identity theft, and aggravated medical assault. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the words filled the room, Kenneth looked at me—really looked at me—for the first time in years. He didn't see the quiet, submissive wife he had spent five years gaslighting. He saw the youngest CFO in the history of Rollins Global.

"Sabrina..." Kenneth pleaded, his voice breaking into genuine desperate tears. "Please... don't do this to me. I'll give the money back! I'll tell you where the accounts are! Please!"

I pulled my white trench coat tighter around myself, picked up my briefcase, and looked down at the man who had stolen my body, my trust, and my youth.

May you like

"The surgery separated your bodies, Kenneth," I said softly. "Now the law is going to separate you from everything else."

I turned on my heel and walked out of Room 412, leaving his screams echoing behind me down the long, cold corridor.
