Chapter 5 - The Morning After the Storm

The morning sun rose over the Roberts estate, casting a brilliant, blinding glare across the pristine white snow that blanketed the sprawling lawns. But inside the mansion, the atmosphere was thick with impending doom.

Richard Roberts sat at the head of the dining table, his bathrobe tied tightly around his waist, staring into a cup of black coffee that had long since gone cold. His hands trembled slightly as he held the porcelain mug. Around him, the rest of the family sat in stunned, exhausted silence. Clara looked as though she hadn’t slept a wink, her eyes ringed with dark circles, her hair tied up in a messy bun. David sat hunched over at the end of the table, his phone clutched in his hand like a lifeline that had already snapped.

“It has to be a joke,” David muttered for the hundredth time, his voice cracked and hoarse. “Some kind of elaborate, sick prank. A woman like... like Elena? She doesn’t even know how to balance a checkbook! She drives a ten-year-old Corolla! She wears clothes that cost twenty dollars!”

“Shut up, David!” Clara snapped, slamming her hand onto the table. The sharp crack made Richard wince. “Your stupidity has ruined us! Did you not hear the phone call last night? Did you not see the corporate security notifications?! Your accounts are frozen! We are locked out of our home accounts! My designer handbags are being flagged by the bank!”

“Enough!” Richard roared, slamming his coffee mug down so hard the liquid sloshed over the rim. He stood up, breathing heavily, his face flushed with a dangerous shade of red. “We are the Roberts family! We built our fortune on steel, real estate, and banking! No woman—no matter what kind of delusional fantasy she’s playing—can destroy decades of generational wealth with a single phone call!”

Just as Richard finished speaking, the heavy oak front door of the mansion burst open.

A team of four men in sharp, charcoal suits marched into the foyer without knocking. At the front was a local senior partner from the city’s most prestigious corporate law firm, holding a thick leather briefcase. Behind him stood two bank representatives and a representative from the municipal tax authority.

Brenda rushed out of the kitchen, her face twisted in outrage. “How dare you barge in here?! Who let you in?! Get out of my house right now, or I’ll have you arrested for trespassing!”

The lead attorney didn’t even blink. He opened his leather briefcase, pulled out a stack of heavy legal documents, and laid them out neatly on the mahogany entryway console table.

“Mrs. Roberts,” the attorney said, his voice flat, professional, and entirely devoid of emotion. “I am Arthur Pendelton, senior partner at Pendelton & Associates. I am here on behalf of Nova Group’s legal division.”

David stumbled out of the dining room, his eyes wide with panic. “Pendelton? You... you represented our firm during the Meridian merger last year! You know me! I’m David Miller, Regional Sales Director!”

Arthur Pendelton turned his head slowly, looking at David as if he were a speck of dust on his polished leather shoes.

“Former Regional Sales Director, Mr. Miller,” Arthur corrected coldly. “And as of 6:00 AM this morning, my firm has been instructed to initiate formal bankruptcy proceedings and asset seizure against every corporate entity tied to the Roberts family trust.”

The dining room went dead silent.

Richard staggered forward, grabbing the edge of the console table to steady himself. “What... what did you say? Asset seizure? On what grounds?! We have millions in commercial real estate! We hold controlling shares in three major logistics firms!”

Arthur flipped open a folder, revealing page after page of financial data.

“You did hold controlling shares, Mr. Roberts,” Arthur replied smoothly. “However, over the past twelve hours, Nova Group’s acquisition arm quietly bought up eighty-four percent of your outstanding corporate debt. Furthermore, forensic audits conducted overnight revealed systemic tax fraud, embezzlement, and illegal insider trading tied directly to your family’s holding company.”

Arthur slid a single sheet of paper across the table toward Richard.

“Your bank accounts have been frozen by court order. Your commercial properties have been placed under receivership. And federal investigators have already issued a warrant for the freezing of all personal assets pending a full criminal trial.”

Richard stared at the paper. The words blurred together. The foundation of everything he had spent his entire life building—the status, the power, the untouchable legacy of the Roberts family—was vanishing before his eyes, systematically dismantled like a house of cards in a hurricane.

“No...” Richard whispered, his knees buckling. He caught himself against the wall, sliding slowly down to the floor, gasping for breath. “No... this isn't possible... who... who ordered this?”

Arthur Pendelton looked down at the fallen patriarch with absolute indifference.

“The Chairwoman,” Arthur said simply. “Elena Nova.”
