Chapter 4 - The Midnight Awakening

The freezing night air hit Elena like a physical blow as she stepped out of the massive iron gates of the Roberts estate, carrying Lily securely against her chest. The dented, silver-gray sedan sat parked on the shoulder of the snow-dusted suburban street, looking utterly out of place among the row of gleaming European luxury cars lining the driveway.

Behind her, the heavy oak front door of the mansion swung open, casting a warm, golden rectangle of light onto the pristine snow.

“Elena! Wait!”

Mark’s voice echoed through the quiet night. He came running down the stone steps, his winter coat flapping open in the wind, his breath pluming into white clouds in the freezing air. He caught up to her just as she reached the passenger side of the sedan.

“Elena, stop, please!” Mark panted, grabbing her elbow. His eyes were wide with panic and disbelief. “What was that back there? Who... who were you talking to? Marcus Vance? That’s... that’s the CEO of Nova Group! How do you even know him? Are you... are you having an affair? Is that how you’ve been getting money for all these years while pretending to be broke?”

Elena stopped. She slowly turned her head to look at her husband. The pity in her eyes deepened, turning into a cold, heavy disappointment. After five years of marriage, after sharing a bed, raising a child, and building a life together, this was his first conclusion. An affair. Not that she was capable, not that she was powerful, but that she must have sold herself to achieve something he couldn't.

“An affair, Mark?” Elena asked softly, her voice devoid of any warmth. “Is that really where your mind goes? That I slept my way to the top of the corporate world?”

“What else am I supposed to think?!” Mark threw his hands up in frustration, his voice rising in pitch. “You’ve been wearing clothes from thrift stores! You drive this piece-of-junk car! You spend your days volunteering at the community center! And then tonight, you make a single phone call, and boom—David’s entire life is ruined?! Nova Group is a five-billion-dollar multinational conglomerate! People like us don’t even get put on hold by their customer service, let alone have their Senior Executive Vice President jumping at our command!”

“People like us?” Elena repeated the phrase, letting out a short, bitter laugh. “Mark, look at me.”

She unlocked the sedan with a remote click, gently laid Lily across the back seat, and covered her with a thick wool blanket. Then, she turned back to face her husband, stepping directly under the amber glow of the streetlamp.

“For five years, I let you believe you were the breadwinner of this family, even when your business ventures failed and we had to live on my personal savings. I let your family treat me like dirt because I wanted to see if you would ever defend me. I wanted to see if the man I married had a spine, or if he was just another coward hiding behind his father’s checkbook.”

Mark stepped back, blinking rapidly. “What are you talking about? My father’s checkbook? I haven’t taken a dime from my father since we got married!”

“No,” Elena said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “You haven’t taken his money because you’re too proud. But you’ve taken his validation. Every time your mother humiliated me, you looked away. Every time your sister mocked our life, you smiled along just to keep the peace. You traded your wife’s dignity for a seat at their holiday table.”

“That’s not true!” Mark shouted, though his voice lacked conviction. He swallowed hard, his gaze shifting nervously toward the mansion behind them. “You don’t understand my family. They’re old money. They’re powerful. If we don’t play by their rules—.”

“Rules?” Elena interrupted, her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce intensity that made Mark instinctively take another step back. “There are no rules, Mark. There is only power. And tonight, you learned whose hands that power actually rests in.”

Before Mark could reply, a low, ominous rumble broke the silence of the quiet residential street.

From around the corner, a sleek, matte-black Maybach glided silently over the snow, its headlights cutting through the darkness like twin lasers. It slowed down smoothly and came to a halt directly behind Elena’s dented sedan.

The rear door of the Maybach clicked open, and a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped out into the freezing night. He held a large black umbrella, though the snow had temporarily stopped falling. It was Marcus Vance—the man who, less than twenty minutes ago, had taken Elena’s orders over the phone.

Mark’s jaw dropped. He stared at the billionaire executive stepping out of a luxury limousine on a suburban side street in the middle of nowhere, his brain struggling to process the visual data.

Marcus walked straight past Mark as if he were a ghost, approached Elena, and bowed his head respectfully.

“Chairwoman,” Marcus said, his voice crisp and deferential. “The private jet is fueled and waiting at the private hangar. The board has already been briefed regarding the restructuring of the North-Eastern division. Shall we proceed to headquarters?”

Elena adjusted the collar of her coat. “Not yet, Marcus. I need a full report on the Roberts family’s corporate holdings by 8:00 AM tomorrow. Every asset, every stock portfolio, every debt.”

“Consider it done, Chairwoman,” Marcus replied without a moment’s hesitation.

Mark stood frozen, his eyes darting between Marcus Vance and his wife. The words caught in his throat, choking him. Chairwoman. The word echoed in his mind like a recurring nightmare.

“E-Elena...” Mark finally managed to choke out, his voice trembling violently as he reached out a trembling hand. “What... what is this? Who... who are you?”

Elena turned back to look at her husband one last time, her expression completely unreadable.

“My name is Elena Nova,” she said softly. “And you’re right, Mark... we live in two entirely different worlds.”

She stepped into the back of the Maybach, the heavy door closing with a satisfying, muffled thud. The luxury car glided away into the snowy night, leaving Mark standing alone under the flickering streetlamp, the cold wind howling through the empty street.
