Chapter 6 - A Brand New Day
Two months later, the morning sun broke over Boise, casting a warm golden light across the schoolyard of Oak Ridge Elementary.
The school was under entirely new management. Principal Walsh had been fired and was facing administrative hearings, while Mrs. Porter’s trial was scheduled for the coming spring. The school board had undergone a complete overhaul, with new oversight policies implemented to ensure no child would ever be subjected to such abuse again.
Sophie stood near the playground, laughing with her friends. The trauma of that Tuesday morning had faded, replaced by the profound knowledge that her father was an unshakeable shield in her life.
A sleek black pickup truck pulled up to the curb. Reid stepped out, dressed in his familiar canvas work jacket, fresh off an early morning engine swap.
Sophie waved goodbye to her classmates and ran toward him, her backpack bouncing lightly against her shoulders. She threw her arms around his waist.
"Hey, kiddo," Reid smiled, lifting her up in a quick hug before setting her down. "How was school today?"
"It was great," Sophie grinned, looking up at him with bright, proud eyes. "We learned about state history today. And my new teacher asked us what our parents do for a living."
Reid raised an eyebrow with a soft smile. "Oh yeah? What did you tell them?"
Sophie stood up tall, her voice full of absolute pride. "I told them my dad is the best mechanic in Idaho. And that if anyone ever tries to mess with honest people, he knows how to fix that, too."

Reid laughed, a deep, warm sound that echoed in the quiet morning air. He reached out and gently tweaked her nose. "Come on, little one. Let's go home."
As they drove down the road toward Eastside Auto, Reid looked in the rearview mirror at his daughter, who was happily singing along to the radio. The stains on his hands were still there, the marks of hard work and an honest life. But today, they shone brighter than any badge or title ever could.
