Chapter 4 - The Pressure Cooks

The following morning, the atmosphere at Oak Ridge Elementary was suffocating.
Despite the school's attempts to maintain a facade of normalcy, rumors were flying. Mrs. Porter walked through the hallways with her head held high, attempting to project an aura of unbothered innocence, but the nervous glances she threw toward the main entrance betrayed her.
At 10:00 AM, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the school, followed by an unmarked van. Reid Callahan stepped out, wearing a tailored charcoal suit that replaced his usual greasy work jacket. Beside him was not only Colonel Marcus Vance, but also Sarah Lin, one of the state's top civil rights attorneys.
They walked straight into Principal Walsh's office, unannounced.
Principal Walsh jumped out of her chair. "Mr. Callahan! You cannot simply march in here—"
"Sit down, Principal Walsh," Sarah Lin said, her tone sharp as a razor as she laid a stack of legal documents on the desk. "This is a formal notice of pending litigation against Oak Ridge Elementary, the District School Board, and Mrs. Elaine Porter personally, alleging civil rights violations, defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and attempted extortion."
Walsh’s face turned white. "Extortion? That is an absurd accusation!"
"Is it?" Marcus stepped forward, tossing a plastic evidence bag onto the desk. Inside was a small USB drive. "We obtained a warrant late last night to review the digital audit logs of the classroom’s smart-lock system and internal hallway cameras. The footage shows Mrs. Porter entering the classroom at 6:45 AM, long before any students arrived. She opened her desk drawer, removed an envelope, and slipped it into her coat pocket."
Mrs. Porter, who had been called into the room by Walsh's secretary seconds earlier, froze in the doorway. Her face drained of all color as she stared at the plastic bag on the desk.
"That... that camera footage doesn't prove anything!" Porter stammered, her voice trembling violently. "I was just prepping my lessons!"
"We also executed a search warrant on your personal bank account two hours ago, Mrs. Porter," Marcus continued coldly. "At 8:15 AM yesterday morning—two hours before you claimed the money was stolen—you made an ATM cash deposit of four hundred and eighty dollars at a drive-thru branch three blocks from here. Care to explain the discrepancy?"
Porter backed up against the doorframe, her hands clutching her throat. "This is a witch hunt! You're using your police connections to destroy my life over a dirty mechanic's daughter!"

"That 'dirty mechanic,'" Sarah Lin interjected fiercely, "is a decorated veteran, a business owner, and a father who will see you held accountable to the full extent of the law. And as of five minutes ago, the Idaho State Department of Education has been formally notified of financial fraud across three school districts."
The room fell into a deafening silence. Principal Walsh collapsed back into her executive chair, her eyes wide with terror as she realized the massive cover-up she had enabled was crumbling around her.
