Chapter 5 - The Final Judgment
The trial was short, sharp, and decisive.
In the wood-paneled courtroom of the Multnomah County Courthouse, Ryan sat alone at the defense table. He looked gaunt, his cheap off-the-rack suit hanging loosely on his frame.
I sat at the petitioner's table, flanked by Michael Bennett and Jennifer. Harold and Eleanor Carter sat behind me in the gallery, their presence a silent, powerful testament to whose side they were on.
The judge, a stern-faced woman named Sarah Jenkins, reviewed the final stack of financial audits and custody recommendations. She took off her reading glasses and looked down at Ryan.
"Mr. Carter," Judge Jenkins said, her voice echoing in the quiet courtroom. "In my twenty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a case of such egregious, selfish abandonment. You left a physically recovering mother with two-week-old twins to go on a luxury vacation, using funds meant for their survival, while actively engaging in an extramarital affair."
Ryan kept his head down, staring at his hands.
"The court hereby grants sole legal and physical custody of Ava and Ethan Carter to Emily Carter," the judge announced, slamming her gavel. "Your visitation rights are suspended indefinitely. Furthermore, the court orders a full division of assets, with eighty percent of the marital property awarded to the petitioner, alongside a monthly child support mandate of four thousand dollars, to be deducted directly from any future earnings or trust liquidations."
A quiet gasp of relief escaped my lips. Jennifer wrapped her arm around my shoulders, squeezing tight.
I looked back at Harold and Eleanor. They smiled through their tears, offering a respectful nod. They had lost a son, but they had saved their grandchildren.
