Chapter 1 - The Collapse of a Coward

"Ryan," his mother’s voice was as cold as a Portland winter, stripped of any maternal warmth. "What exactly have you done?"
Ryan clutched the phone to his ear, his eyes still locked on the printed photograph of him kissing a blond stranger on a sun-drenched beach in Ibiza. The paper felt like a branding iron in his chest.
"Mom... I don't know what you're talking about," Ryan stammered, his voice cracking as he looked around the empty, echoing house. "Emily... Emily took the babies. She’s gone. The house is cleared out."
"I know she's gone, Ryan," his mother, Eleanor, snapped. "She’s currently sitting in my living room in Seattle, holding your children. Do you have any idea what you've done to your family? To your reputation?"
"Mom, she's overreacting! I just needed a break! The stress was—"
"A break?!" Eleanor cut him off, her voice trembling with a mixture of rage and disgust. "You abandoned a recovering woman and two-week-old newborns to go party in Europe. And don't you dare lie to me about 'stress.' Emily’s sister, Jennifer, sent me the bank statements. You used the nursery trust fund—money my husband and I set up for our grandchildren's future—to pay for VIP bottle service in Spain!"
Ryan’s throat went dry. He tried to speak, but no sound came out.
"Your father and I have already contacted our estate lawyers," Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a deadly, quiet whisper. "We are cutting you off, Ryan. Every trust, every allowance, and your position at your father’s investment firm. You are on your own. Do not call this number again."
The line went dead.
The silence that followed was deafening. Ryan dropped his phone onto the kitchen counter. It slid across the smooth marble, knocking into the thick stack of legal documents.
He slowly reached out and picked up the first page of the divorce filing. His eyes scanned the bold black letters:
PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE AND EMERGENCY SOLE PHYSICAL AND LEGAL CUSTODY.

Attached to the back of the petition was a temporary restraining order. He was legally barred from coming within five hundred feet of me, Ava, Ethan, or my sister’s property.
Ryan slumped onto the kitchen floor, his back against the cabinets, burying his face in his hands. The luxurious vacation, the wine, the beaches, the freedom—it had all vanished in an instant, replaced by the cold, harsh reality of a life completely ruined.
