Chapter 5 - The Corporate Purge

I turned away from Richard and walked slowly toward the large projection screen at the front of the boardroom.

“Mr. Henderson,” I said without looking back. “Please display the forensic audit files from folder seven on the main monitor.”

“Right away, Ms. Sterling,” the lawyer replied, tapping a few keys on his secure tablet.

Instantly, the massive high-definition screen lit up. Rows of financial data, transaction histories, offshore bank transfers, and internal corporate emails filled the display in glaring white and red text.

A collective gasp echoed around the table.

“What... what is that?” stammered one of the older board members, his face turning pale as he stared at the screen.

“That,” I said, turning back around to face the room, my arms crossed over my blazer, “is a complete forensic accounting of the last four years of corporate restructuring under Richard Sterling’s division. Over forty-two million dollars in company funds systematically funneled into shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands. Kickbacks from vendor contracts, asset stripping, and illegal insider trading.”

Richard leaped to his feet, his chair crashing backward onto the marble floor with a loud bang.

“It’s a forgery!” Richard screamed, his voice cracking with panic, spittle flying from his lips. “She’s lying! She planted those files! Security! Arrest her! Arrest both of them!”

The two security guards looked at the massive screen, then at Richard, and wisely took two steps backward.

“You’ve been embezzling from Arthur’s philanthropic division for years, Richard,” I said calmly, walking slowly back toward the head of the table. “Arthur knew about it. That’s why he kept you at arm's length. He was building an airtight federal case against you, waiting for the exact right moment to drop the hammer. He just ran out of time before he could finish it.”

I stopped right beside Richard, leaning in close so only he could hear my next words.

“And now,” I whispered, “I am finishing it for him.”

I raised my voice so the entire boardroom could hear every syllable.

“Effective immediately, Richard Sterling is terminated from all executive positions within Sterling Global Industries, stripped of all stock options, and barred from entering any company property. Furthermore, these forensic audit files have already been securely transmitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Attorney’s Office.”

As if on cue, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open once again.

This time, it wasn't corporate executives or lawyers standing in the doorway. It was four federal agents in dark suits, badges gleaming on their belts, accompanied by local police officers.

The lead agent stepped into the room, scanning the faces around the table until his eyes locked onto Richard Sterling.

“Richard Sterling?” the agent asked formally.

Richard stood frozen, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water, color completely gone from his face.

“You have the right to remain silent,” the agent said, stepping forward and clicking a pair of cold steel handcuffs around Richard’s wrists with a sharp, echoing snap. “Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

As Richard was dragged out of the boardroom in humiliating silence—his expensive Italian cuffs scuffing against the marble floor—the remaining board members sat in absolute, petrified awe. Not a single person moved. Not a single person spoke.

They looked at me not as a junior hospice volunteer or a grieving young widow anymore, but as the undisputed titan sitting at the head of the table.

Mr. Henderson walked up beside me, handing me a heavy gold fountain pen that had belonged to Arthur.

“Your signature is required on the restructuring orders, Ms. Sterling,” the lawyer said respectfully. “To confirm the allocation of fifty percent of corporate profits directly into national rural healthcare and neonatal research trusts. Just as Arthur wanted.”

I looked down at the gold pen. I thought back to the cramped living room where a dying man had looked at me with tired, loving green eyes and asked to not die alone. I thought of the plain white T-shirt I had worn on my wedding day, and the invisible safety net he had woven around my life for over a decade.

He had protected me in the shadows when I was a struggling child.

Now, it was my turn to protect his legacy in the light.

I uncapped the pen, steady and resolute, and signed my new name across the bottom of the document in bold, sweeping strokes.

Eleanor Sterling.
