Chapter 3 - The Estate and the Enemies

Forty-five minutes later, Mr. Henderson returned.
He found me sitting at the kitchen table, the manila folder open before me, surrounded by legal deeds, bank summaries, stock portfolios, and corporate charters. My eyes were red-rimmed, but my expression had shifted from shock to a cold, hard focus.
Mr. Henderson placed a fresh cup of coffee next to my elbow. “I see you’ve reached the asset disclosure section.”
“Four hundred and fifty million dollars,” I said, my voice eerily calm as I looked up at the lawyer. “Carl—Arthur—lived in a modest, peeling-paint suburban house with mismatched furniture and a leaking kitchen faucet. He ate instant oatmeal and played chess with a plastic board missing a knight. Why?”
“Because wealth is a cage, Ms. Sterling,” Henderson replied, taking a seat opposite me. “Arthur spent the first thirty years of his life suffocating in boardrooms, surrounded by greedy relatives, backstabbing executives, and people who only loved the Sterling name for its bank accounts. When he was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he abandoned the penthouses, the yachts, and the executive suites. He wanted to live simply. He wanted to know what it felt like to be loved for who he was, not what he owned.”
“And he found me,” I murmured, running my thumb over the edge of a property deed for a sprawling commercial real estate complex downtown.
“He didn't just find you, Eleanor. He vetted your soul,” Henderson said quietly. “And now, legally and irrevocably, you are the majority shareholder of Sterling Global Industries, owner of three residential towers, two tech startups, a venture capital fund, and various philanthropic trusts.”
Before I could process the staggering weight of those words, my phone buzzed violently on the kitchen table.
It wasn't a call. It was a calendar alert, followed by a news notification banner flashing across the top of my screen.
BREAKING NEWS: Sterling Global Industries Board of Directors Announces Emergency Meeting Following the Unconfirmed Death of Reclusive Billionaire Arthur Sterling. Corporate Raiders Threaten Hostile Takeover.
I stared at the headline, a cold shiver running down my spine.
Mr. Henderson leaned forward, his professional composure tightening into grim seriousness. “Ah. And here begins the real test.”
“What is this?” I asked, pointing at the news banner.
“Arthur kept his terminal illness a secret from the public and the board to prevent a premature collapse of stock value,” Henderson explained quickly. “Now that he has passed away, and his death certificate has been filed with the state registry, the board of directors is panicking. Specifically, Arthur’s cousin, Richard Sterling—a ruthless corporate raider who has been waiting years to strip the company’s assets—is calling an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning at nine o'clock.”
“Richard Sterling,” I repeated, testing the name.
“He is a vulture, Eleanor,” Henderson warned. “He believes Arthur died without a valid will, which would legally pass the entire estate and controlling voting shares to him under state intestacy laws. If he walks into that boardroom tomorrow morning unopposed, he will liquidate the philanthropic trusts, fire half the employees, and sell off the company for parts.”
I looked down at the documents on the table, then back at the photograph of Carl—Arthur—smiling softly while holding a cup of tea in his kitchen.
For three years, he had protected me from the shadows. He had quietly made sure I survived the darkest moments of my life, asking for nothing in return. He had given me his name, his heart, and his legacy.
The grief that had weighed heavy in my chest suddenly transformed into a surge of fierce, unyielding steel.
“Mr. Henderson,” I said, standing up from the table, my voice steady, clear, and utterly resolute.

The lawyer looked up, surprised by the sudden change in my posture. “Yes, Ms. Sterling?”
“Call the board,” I said, buttoning my plain cardigan and walking toward the door to grab my keys. “Tell them the new majority owner and CEO of Sterling Global Industries will be attending tomorrow morning's meeting. And tell Richard Sterling to save a seat for me at the head of the table.”
