Chapter 6 - The Promise on the Bridge

Spring arrived in New York four months later.

The icy winter had melted away, leaving the grounds of the Moretti estate covered in green grass, blooming tulips, and sweet, warm sunshine.

The heavy security guards who once stood like stone statues at the estate gates now smiled when they saw small pink bicycles racing down the paved driveways. The mansion was no longer a symbol of mafia fear—it was a real home, filled with warmth, music, and light.

On a sunny Saturday afternoon, a black SUV parked near a small, quiet public park in Queens.

Dominic stepped out of the vehicle, dressed in a comfortable light grey suit without a tie. He opened the rear door, reaching in to lift four-year-old Lily out of her car seat. She wore a yellow summer dress, her dark hair tied into two cute pigtails, holding a small bouquet of fresh white lilies in her hands.

Beside them, Mary stepped out, holding a small blanket and a thermos of tea.

"Are you sure you're okay with this, Dominic?" Mary asked softly, looking around the peaceful park.

"I need to do this, Mary," Dominic answered warmly. "We all do."

They walked along a paved walkway surrounded by towering oak trees, reaching a charming wooden footbridge that spanned a quiet, sparkling stream.

It was the exact footbridge from the photograph. The bridge where Sophia had stood four years ago, laughing at the camera in her emerald coat.

Dominic stopped in the middle of the bridge. He set Lily down gently on her feet.

The afternoon sun filtered through the leaves above, casting golden dappled light across the wooden planks.

Lily walked over to the wooden railing, looking down at the clear water flowing beneath them. She reached out her small hand, carefully dropping one of the white lilies into the stream, watching it float gently away on the current.

"Is Mommy looking at us right now, Daddy?" Lily asked softly, looking up into Dominic's face with her clear, dark eyes.

Dominic knelt beside his daughter, wrapping his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close to his chest. He reached into his pocket, pulling out the worn photograph that Lily had shown him beneath the stairs on Christmas night.

He looked at Sophia's beautiful, laughing face in the picture, then looked at his daughter, then up at the bright blue sky above.

"Yes, sweetheart," Dominic whispered, his voice full of warmth and peace. "She's watching us every single day. And she's so proud of you."

"She knows you found me, right?" Lily asked, leaning her head against his shoulder.

"She knows," Dominic smiled, kissing her forehead. "She guided you right to me under those stairs."

Mary stepped up beside them, placing a comforting hand on Dominic's shoulder as they watched the white flower drift down the river together.

The shadows of the past—the violence, the lies, the fear, the coldness of the Moretti empire—had all been washed away. In their place remained a father's boundless love, a family restored from grief, and a promise made on a wooden bridge that would never be broken.

Dominic picked Lily up into his arms, tossing her into the air as she burst into sweet, ringing laughter that echoed through the trees.

"Come on, my little princess," Dominic laughed, holding her tight as they walked back toward the car together. "Let's go home."
