Chapter 4 - War in the Shadows

The fallout from the engagement party was immediate, brutal, and swift.
By the following morning, news had leaked throughout the five boroughs that Dominic Moretti had called off his engagement to Isabella Vitorio, banished his mother from the family estate, and claimed an illegitimate four-year-old daughter.
For the old-school mafia bosses of the New York Commission, this was seen as a sign of catastrophic instability.
Inside a dimly lit private room in a high-end steakhouse in Midtown Manhattan, three heads of the rival crime families gathered around a heavy oak table. Sitting at the head of the table was Vincent Vitorio, Isabella’s father, his face dark with embarrassment and fury. Beside him sat Lucia Moretti, her eyes cold, calculating, and hungry for revenge against her own son.
"He disrespected my daughter," Vincent growled, slamming his fist onto the table, making the brandy glasses rattle. "He disrespected the Vitorio name in front of two hundred guests! The Commission cannot allow a wild dog like Dominic Moretti to run the city!"
"Dominic is weak right now," Lucia chimed in, her voice cold as ice. "He is distracted by that girl and her mother's memory. He stripped his security detail at the estate to focus entirely on protecting the child. If you strike now, Vincent, you can seize his shipping docks in Brooklyn and force him to surrender his seat on the Commission."
"He's your son, Lucia," another boss remarked, raising an eyebrow. "You're asking us to tear down your own blood?"
"He stopped being my son the moment he chose a bastard child over the family honor," Lucia sneered. "I built the Moretti empire. I will not let him burn it to the ground for a dead waitress's memory."
Meanwhile, back at the Long Island estate, the atmosphere was entirely different.
The dark, oppressive mansion that had once felt like a stone prison was now alive with light. The heavy black drapes in the grand living room had been pulled back, allowing the bright winter sunlight to flood the room.
Dominic sat on the plush rug, wearing a simple navy sweater and jeans—an outfit no one in New York had ever seen him wear—helping Lily build a massive castle out of colorful wooden blocks.
Mary sat on the nearby sofa, sipping fresh coffee, watching the scene with a soft smile. For the first time in four years, the crushing weight of survival had been lifted from her shoulders.
Enzo walked into the room, carrying a secure tablet. He looked down at Dominic playing with the blocks, a faint smile touching his lips before his expression turned serious.
"Dominic," Enzo said quietly. "We have a situation."
Dominic didn't look up from the tower he was constructing with Lily. "Talk to me, Enzo."
"Lucia met with Vincent Vitorio and the Genovese family two hours ago in Midtown," Enzo reported, his voice dropping into a low murmur so Lily wouldn't hear. "They're moving on the Brooklyn piers. Vitorio’s men have already seized two of our warehouses. They're trying to provoke a war to force you to step down."
Dominic placed the final wooden block on top of the castle tower.
"Daddy, look! It's so tall!" Lily cheered, clapping her hands.
"It's beautiful, sweetheart," Dominic smiled, kissing the top of her head. He stood up smoothly, turning his gaze toward Enzo.
The warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced in an instant by the cold, calculating intelligence of the undisputed king of New York.
"Is the security team fully positioned around the estate?" Dominic asked.
"Thirty armed men inside the perimeter, thermal cameras on the gates, and two armored SUVs ready," Enzo confirmed.
"Good," Dominic said. "Mary, take Lily upstairs to her new playroom. Enzo and I have some business to handle."
"Is everything okay, Dominic?" Mary asked nervously, standing up to take Lily's hand.
"Everything is fine, Mary," Dominic assured her, his tone entirely calm. "Just a minor business dispute. It will be settled before dinner."
As Mary led Lily up the stairs, Dominic walked over to his grand oak desk, opening a concealed wall panel behind it. Inside hung an array of tactical gear and custom firearms.
Dominic pulled out a sleek, black leather holster, strapping it across his shoulders before slipping into his tailored suit jacket.
"Are we calling in the capos?" Enzo asked, racking the slide of his own weapon.
"No," Dominic replied, adjusting his cuffs. "The Commission thinks I've grown soft because I found my daughter. They think my heart is weak. It's time to remind them why my father put me in charge instead of my mother."

He looked out the window at the snow beginning to fall over the estate.
"We aren't going to defend the piers, Enzo," Dominic said coldly. "We're going to take Vincent Vitorio’s entire supply chain in one night."
