Chapter 1 - The Iron Gates of Truth

The heavy bronze-and-iron doors of the Moretti ballroom did not slam shut; they slid into place with a sickening, hydraulic hiss that sounded like a guillotine dropping.

Nobody moved. The three hundred guests—senators, judges, underbosses, and socialites—stood frozen in their expensive silk and tailored wool. The string quartet had retreated to the shadows, their instruments held like shields.

Vanessa’s hand froze against her white silk gown. The tears she had summoned so easily dried instantly, leaving her eyes looking wide, glassy, and predatory.

"Alessandro," she whispered, her voice losing its beautiful tremble, replaced by a sharp, desperate edge. "What is the meaning of this? You are letting a common maid humiliate me—humiliate us—in front of the entire city. Open these doors immediately."

Alessandro did not look at her. He stood tall, the chandelier light catching the sharp, aristocratic lines of his jaw. He adjusted the cuffs of his tuxedo with the slow, terrifying calm of a man who had already decided who was going to live and who was going to bleed.

"I don't like being lied to, Vanessa," Alessandro said. His voice wasn't loud, but in the dead silence of the ballroom, it carried to the very back corners. "But more than that, I don't like being played for a fool."

"I am not lying!" she cried, stepping toward him, her hands clawing at his chest. "I am carrying your heir! The Moretti bloodline! Are you really going to destroy our future because of a bitter, jealous servant and a sick child?"

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I squeezed Emma tighter against my skirt. Her small body was warm, her feverish breath damp against my leg. I knew the rules of this world. Women like me didn't survive when the titans fought. If Vanessa convinced him, or if Alessandro decided that keeping up appearances was worth more than the truth, Emma and I would disappear before the rain stopped.

Alessandro gently, but firmly, peeled Vanessa’s hands off his suit. He stepped back, creating a cold, empty chasm between them.

"Gianni," Alessandro called out.

From the shadow of the marble pillars, a massive man with a scarred temple and the quiet posture of a veteran soldier stepped forward. Gianni was Alessandro's head of security, a man who answered only to the Don.

"Yes, boss," Gianni said.

"Take four men. Go to Miss Cole’s private suite in the west wing," Alessandro commanded, his eyes never leaving Vanessa’s pale face. "Search the master closet. Behind the garment bags. Look for a box with small flowers printed on the side. If you find it, bring it here. Along with any receipts, documents, or medical records inside."

"Alessandro, no!" Vanessa shrieked, taking a step forward to block Gianni, but the security chief simply walked around her as if she were made of glass. "This is an invasion of my privacy! This is illegal! You cannot search my things!"

"This is my house, Vanessa," Alessandro said softly. "Everything in it belongs to me. Including the secrets you brought into it."

The ballroom erupted into a low, frantic murmur. Guests whispered behind their hands, eyes darting between Vanessa, Alessandro, and me. I felt the weight of three hundred stares pressing down on my shoulders, judging my cheap black maid's uniform, my worn shoes, and the toddler clinging to my knees.

Vanessa turned her venomous gaze toward me. "You think you’ve won, Clara? You’re a pathetic, desperate widow living on my scraps. Even if there is a box, it’s a prop! A joke! I bought it for a... a costume party! You’ve ruined your life tonight. I will make sure you never find a job in this state again."

"That’s enough, Vanessa," Alessandro said.

The coldness in his voice was absolute. It was the same tone his father had used before sending men to the docks to never return.

"We will wait," Alessandro declared, turning to his guests. "Nobody leaves. Enjoy the champagne."
