Chapter 4 - THE BLOODLINE AMBUSH

The kiss on the balcony was a revelation—a soft, breathtaking promise of a future I had never believed I deserved. For three blissful days, our home felt like a sanctuary. The quiet glances across the breakfast table, the subtle touch of Hannah’s hand on my arm, and the sight of my daughters flourishing under her care filled my world with absolute light.

However, in the dark underbelly of the city, defeated predators do not go away quietly.

Victor Rossi had lost his hit squad at my estate, but his desperation had only grown. Facing complete bankruptcy and the loss of his syndicate territories to my organization, Rossi decided to play his final, most cowardly card.

It was a bright Thursday afternoon. I had taken Hannah, Claire, and Maya to a private, fenced park near the Hudson River—a secured location owned by my security firm where the girls could play safely in the grass.

Claire was walking independently now, using a light wooden cane for balance, chasing her sister around a wooden playhouse while Hannah sat on a picnic blanket, sketching drawing ideas for their art class.

Four of my armed guards were stationed around the perimeter of the park, keeping watch.

Suddenly, a loud, artificial pop echoed from the street outside the park gates, followed by a thick cloud of white smoke pouring over the walls.

"Smoke grenade!" Marcus shouted from the gate, pulling his sidearm. "Boss, get the girls to the armored transport! Now!"

Before my security detail could react, three unmarked delivery vans slammed through the iron park gates, tearing across the green grass. Dozens of tear-gas canisters were launched into the air, blinding my guards and filling the park with choking white fog.

"Hannah! Get the girls!" I roared, drawing my weapon as heavy automatic gunfire erupted through the smoke.

Hannah didn't freeze. Even as tear gas stung her eyes, she leaped off the blanket, grabbing Maya in her left arm and sweeping Claire into her right, sprinting toward the heavy concrete gazebo in the center of the park.

I stepped into the line of fire, shooting two masked mercenaries who emerged from the first van, shielding Hannah’s retreat with my own body. A bullet grazed my upper arm, tearing through my suit jacket, but I barely felt the pain.

"Damon! Look out!" Hannah screamed from inside the gazebo.

I spun around just in time to see Victor Rossi himself step out from the second van, holding a heavy tactical shotgun. His eyes were bloodshot, his face twisted in unhinged, maniacal rage.

"If I can't have New York, Vance," Rossi shrieked over the deafening noise, "you won't have your family!"

Rossi raised his shotgun, aiming it directly at the gazebo where Hannah was shielding my two daughters with her own body.

Time seemed to slow to a agonizing crawl.

There was no time for me to reach Rossi. There was no time for my guards to clear the smoke.

Hannah looked out from the gazebo, saw Rossi aiming at the children, and without a single second of hesitation, threw her entire body over Claire and Maya, using her back as a human shield to protect my daughters from the incoming blast.

"NO!" I screamed from the depths of my soul.

Driven by a terrifying, superhuman surge of adrenaline, I threw myself across the space, raising my weapon, and fired four rapid shots directly through the smoke.

My bullets struck Rossi in the chest before he could pull his trigger. He stumbled back, his shotgun firing harmlessly into the sky, before collapsing onto the grass, disarmed and defeated once and for all.

My remaining security guards swarmed the park, eliminating the last of Rossi's mercenaries and securing the perimeter.

I dropped my gun onto the bloody grass and sprinted into the gazebo, falling to my knees beside Hannah.

"Hannah! Hannah!" I sobbed, my voice breaking in a way it never had in my entire life.

She was lying on the concrete floor, holding Claire and Maya tightly beneath her body. Neither of my daughters had a single scratch on them. Claire was crying softly, holding onto Hannah’s dress, while Maya clutched her waist.

Hannah slowly rolled over, gasping for air from the tear gas. She looked up at me, her face pale, her eyes searching mine frantically.

"Are... are the girls okay?" she gasped, her voice weak and trembling. "Damon... are they hurt?"

She hadn't checked herself. She hadn't cared about her own life. Her only thought had been the safety of my children.

I pulled her into my arms, holding her so tightly against my chest that I could feel her rapid heart beating against mine. Tears poured down my face as I kissed her forehead, her hair, her lips.

May you like

"They're safe, Hannah," I sobbed, holding my entire world in my arms. "They're safe because of you. You saved them."

Hannah closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath, and rested her head against my shoulder as the sound of police sirens began to wail in the distance.
