Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

We fled to a secluded estate in the mountains of Vermont—a property Dominic owned under a false corporate name that even Matteo hadn't known about. It was a beautiful, rustic house built of cedar and stone, surrounded by miles of dense pine forests and a crystal-clear lake. There were no iron gates here, no security shutters. Just nature, silence, and the space to breathe.

For the first two weeks, Dominic stayed inside the house, refusing to leave our sides. He helped me make breakfast, he learned how to braid Mia’s curls, and he sat on the carpet for hours listening to Ava read simple picture books.

The feared mafia boss was shedding his skin, piece by piece.

But the final ghost of his past had to be faced.

On a crisp October morning, while the girls were outside playing in the leaves under the watchful eye of a small, trusted security detail, a lone black sedan pulled up the long dirt driveway.

Dominic stood on the porch, his hand resting calmly on the railing. He didn't draw a weapon. He had been expecting this.

An elderly man stepped out of the car. It was Emilio Moretti, the patriarch of the rival family that had backed Matteo’s betrayal. He looked frail, leaning heavily on a cane, his face lined with the realization that the war was already over.

"Dominic," the old man said, his voice cracking in the cold air.

"Emilio," Dominic replied, his voice level. "You're a long way from the city."

"I came to see if the rumors were true," Emilio said, looking past Dominic toward the lawn where the triplets were laughing, their clear, joyful voices echoing through the trees. "They said you abandoned the families. They said you gave up the docks, the unions, the territory."

"I didn't give them up, Emilio," Dominic stated, stepping down from the porch. "I left them in the dirt where they belong. New York is yours. The Moretti family can have every square inch of the concrete. But if a single one of your men ever crosses the state line into Vermont, I will return. And I won't just bury your sons, Emilio. I will erase your name from history."

The old mafia boss looked at Dominic, then at the three little girls who were now running toward the porch, completely unbothered by the ghost of their past. He saw the absolute, terrifying peace in Dominic’s eyes—the kind of peace that only belongs to a man who has nothing left to lose because he has already saved everything that matters.

Emilio bowed his head slowly. "The territory is enough, Dominic. Live your life."

He got back into his car and drove away, the dust settling on the gravel driveway like a final curtain falling on a dark play.
