Chapter 5 - Whispers of Betrayal

The lockdown turned the mansion into a gilded fortress. Heavy steel shutters were lowered over the bulletproof glass windows, and the number of armed guards on the lawn tripled. The girls didn't understand the danger; they thought it was a giant game of hide-and-seek, a narrative I desperately maintained by building massive pillow forts in the central hallway where there were no windows.

Dominic spent less time at his corporate offices and more time in the house, pacing the corridors like a caged panther.

One evening, while the girls were fast asleep inside their fortress of blankets, I found myself sitting on the kitchen counter, drinking a cup of chamomile tea to calm my frayed nerves. The kitchen doors swung open, and Dominic walked in, looking completely exhausted. He had removed his tie, and his shirt sleeves were rolled up, revealing the dark, intricate tattoos that covered his forearms—symbols of a life I could never truly understand.

"You look like you haven't slept in days," I said quietly, offering him a small smile.

"I don't sleep when my family is threatened," he replied, pouring himself a cup of black coffee. He leaned against the counter next to me, the proximity making my heart skip a beat.

"Did you find the leak?" I asked, hesitating before crossing the professional boundary.

Dominic’s face darkened, the shadows beneath his eyes deepening. "Not yet. But the circle is small. Only five people knew the exact rotation of the guards. Matteo is vetting everyone."

He took a slow sip of his coffee, his eyes drifting down to my face. "Why haven't you run, Clara? I haven't locked you in. You could have demanded to leave when Matteo brought the news."

"I tried running once, Mr. Russo," I said, staring into my tea. "When my father’s shop was burned down by a rival crew, we ran to Chicago. But the fear follows you. It doesn't care about state lines. At least here, I know exactly where the monsters are. And I know you won't let them win."

Dominic looked at me with an expression I had never seen on him before. It wasn't power, or authority, or grief. It was admiration.

"You're stronger than you think, Clara," he murmured, his hand moving along the counter until his knuckles brushed against my knee. The contact sent a jolt of electricity straight up my spine. "Carmen used to say that the bravest people aren't the ones who don't feel fear. They're the ones who look at the fear and move forward anyway. You have her spirit."

"I'm just a cleaner, Dominic," I whispered, using his first name for the first time.

"No," Dominic said, his voice dropping an octave as he stepped closer, closing the final inch of distance between us. "You're the only beautiful thing left in this house."

Before the moment could deepen, a sharp electronic buzz cut through the kitchen. It was Dominic’s secure satellite phone. He pulled it from his pocket, his face hardening instantly as he answered.

"Russo."

He listened for three seconds before his eyes widened in absolute fury. He looked at me, his face turning a sickly, pale white.

"Matteo," Dominic growled into the phone. "Where are they?"
