Chapter 4 - The Eviction of the Entitled

At noon, I was discharged from the hospital. I didn't take an Uber. A private town car, driven by my personal security detail, pulled up to the front entrance. I slid into the back seat, cradling my daughter securely against my chest, ready to reclaim my home.
When the car pulled up to the gates of the Miller estate—the sprawling, five-acre property my father had built—the white SUV was nowhere to be seen. Instead, Brandon, Adelaide, and Courtney were standing on the manicured lawn, surrounded by six heavy-duty moving boxes.
They looked completely disheveled. Brandon’s expensive shirt was wrinkled, Courtney's red dress was stained at the hem from their long walk back from the restaurant, and Adelaide was furiously yelling at two private security guards blocking the front door.
As I stepped out of the car, Brandon charged toward me, his face red with fury. "Elena! You have gone completely insane! You locked us out of our own house! My mother has been sitting on the grass for three hours!"
"This isn't your house, Brandon," I said, my voice ringing out across the quiet driveway. "This property is held under the Miller Family Trust. Your name was removed as a permitted resident the moment the forensic audit flagged the embezzlement at midnight."

"You can't do this!" Courtney shrieked, clutching her designer bag as if it could save her. "We helped you run that business! We are family!"
"You're an employee who is about to be terminated for cause, Courtney," I countered, looking at her with pure disgust. "And as for the 'decent outfits' you wanted to buy my daughter, Adelaide? You can use your prison stipend to purchase them."
