Chapter 3 - The Audit of Shadows

By 8:00 AM the next morning, the fog had cleared over the Dallas skyline, and the private recovery suite at the hospital felt like a command center.

Mr. Henderson, my senior corporate counsel and the man who had protected my late father's estate for twenty years, walked into the room carrying a sleek leather briefcase and a warm cup of herbal tea.

"The forensic accounting team worked through the night, Elena," Henderson said, pulling up a chair beside my bed. He looked down at my daughter, who was softly sleeping in her bassinet, and his expression softened. "She has your father's brow. She's beautiful."

"Thank you, Arthur," I said, sitting up. "Give it to me straight. What did they find?"

Henderson opened the briefcase, pulling out a thick stack of audited bank records. "Brandon didn't just leave you at the hospital to be cruel. He left because he thought he had finally secured the final signature to transfer the primary intellectual property of Miller Logistics into his family's shell corporation."

My chest tightened, but I didn't flinch. "He thought the postpartum state would make me compliant."

"Exactly," Henderson nodded, his eyes turning to absolute flint. "Over the past twelve months, Brandon, Courtney, and Adelaide have systematically embezzled $4.2 million from the company's reserve accounts. They used the funds to buy Courtney's designer wardrobe, pay off Adelaide's gambling debts in Shreveport, and secure the lease on the very restaurant they were dining at last night. But they made one fatal mistake."

I smiled, a cold, sharp expression. "They forgot who actually owns the corporate charters."

"They did," Henderson agreed. "They signed the transfers using a forged digital signature under your name. Because the accounts were frozen at 10:38 PM before the wire cleared, the money is still in our vault. And the forgery is fully documented."
