Chapter 5 - The Gala of Reckoning

The Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of crystal chandeliers, tuxedo-clad billionaires, high-society socialites, and political figures.
At the center of the room stood Arthur Voss—sixty-five years old, silver-haired, impeccably dressed, holding a glass of vintage champagne as he conversed with three major board members.
"With Roman’s late wife gone, and his sudden mental instability regarding those non-verbal children," Arthur said, a smooth, fake sorrow in his voice, "the board needs firm, stable leadership. Tonight's vote will secure the future of the Voss Group."
"Indeed, Arthur," one of the board members agreed. "Roman hasn't attended a board meeting in weeks. He’s obsessed with those toddlers. It's tragic, but he is unfit to lead."
Suddenly, the massive brass doors of the ballroom slammed open.
The grand orchestra stopped playing mid-note. The hum of two hundred voices faded into absolute silence.
Walking through the entrance was Roman Voss.
He looked magnificent and formidable in a immaculate black tuxedo. But it was not Roman who caused a wave of stunned gasps to ripple through the room.
Walking beside him, her arm resting gracefully inside his, was Pamela Hayes.
She was breathtaking. She wore a floor-to-ceiling gown of deep burgundy silk that hugged her figure, her dark hair styled into an elegant regal updo. Around her neck sat a multi-million-dollar diamond necklace from the Voss family vault. Her posture was flawless, her head held high, her eyes fixed directly on Arthur Voss.
Behind them walked Vance and four armed security guards, holding leather briefcases.
Arthur Voss lowered his champagne glass, his eyes narrowing into narrow slits of confusion and rising anxiety.
"Roman?" Arthur called out, forcing a practiced smile as he stepped forward into the center of the room. "What is the meaning of this dramatic entrance? And who is your lovely companion?"
Roman and Pamela stopped ten feet away from Arthur. The entire crowd formed a wide circle around them, smelling blood in the air.
"Uncle Arthur," Roman spoke, his voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "I felt it was important to attend tonight’s gala in person. Especially since you’ve been telling the board that I am mentally unfit to run this empire."
Arthur chuckled nervously, waving his hand dismissal. "Now, Roman, those were private discussions regarding your grief—"
"I am not grieving, Arthur," Roman interrupted, his voice sharp as a razor. "In fact, I have never seen more clearly in my entire life."
Roman gestured toward Pamela.
"I would like to introduce the board to Pamela Hayes," Roman announced loudly. "The mother of my children."
Whispers exploded through the room like wildfire. Board members stared at each other in shock.
Arthur’s face turned bright red. "Roman! Have you lost your mind?! Your wife Eleanor died eighteen months ago! You cannot bring some random woman from the street and claim—"
"Eleanor was not the mother of Leo, Maya, and Toby," Pamela spoke up, her voice ringing out with immense strength and dignity.
She stepped forward, looking Arthur dead in the face.
"Fourteen months ago, inside Saint Jude’s Hospital, my three newborn children were stolen from my body while I was drugged," Pamela said, her words striking the room like physical lightning. "Falsified death certificates were issued under the direction of Dr. Harold Vance. My babies were transferred to your late niece Eleanor to cover up her fake pregnancy."
Arthur went pale, taking a step back. "This... this is insane! This is a slanderous lie! Security, remove this woman!"
"Don't move," Roman warned, pointing a finger at the hotel security guards, who immediately froze upon seeing Roman’s armed men.
Roman raised his hand. Vance stepped forward, opening a leather briefcase and pulling out three thick stacks of legal documents, placing them on a nearby display table.
"This file contains three independent, court-certified DNA maternity tests proving Pamela Hayes is the 100% biological mother of the children," Roman declared. "It contains the signed, notarized confession of Dr. Harold Vance. It contains the Cayman Islands bank transfer records showing Eleanor paying three million dollars for the abduction."
The lead board member stepped forward, picking up the DNA report and reading it with wide eyes. "My God... it's authentic."
"And finally," Roman continued, his voice dropping into a lethal register as he looked at Arthur, "it contains the audio recordings recovered from Eleanor’s private cloud storage—recordings of you, Arthur, blackmailing her, coordinating the embezzlement of fifty million dollars, and orchestrating her fatal car crash when she threatened to confess."
Arthur’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers, shattering onto the marble floor.
"You... you can't prove that..." Arthur whimpered, his confidence completely collapsing.
At that exact moment, the main doors opened once more.
Six federal agents from the FBI, accompanied by four officers from the Chicago Police Department, marched into the ballroom, their badges glittering under the chandeliers.
The lead FBI agent walked straight up to Arthur Voss.
"Arthur Voss," the agent announced, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for federal conspiracy, human trafficking, corporate embezzlement, and first-degree murder in the death of Eleanor Voss."
The entire ballroom broke into wild chaos as the federal agents pinned Arthur’s arms behind his back, snapping the handcuffs shut around his wrists.
As Arthur was dragged past Roman and Pamela, he looked at Pamela with eyes filled with pathetic defeat.

Pamela looked down at him with quiet, absolute victory.
"You took my children for fourteen months, Arthur," Pamela whispered softly. "Now the state will take the rest of your life."
