Chapter 4 - The Confession

At 4:30 AM, inside the subterranean holding room of the Voss estate, Dr. Harold Vance sat tied to a heavy wooden chair under the harsh glare of a single overhead bulb.

The fifty-five-year-old physician was sweating profusely, his expensive silk shirt disheveled, his eyes darting frantically around the dark room.

The heavy steel door unlocked, swinging open with a slow, ominous groan.

Roman Voss walked in, wearing a dark suit without a tie. Behind him walked Pamela.

When Dr. Vance saw Pamela’s face, his eyes widened in absolute, paralyzing terror. He went pale as a sheet, his lips trembling violently.

"P-Pamela...?" Vance stuttered, his voice cracking. "No... no, this is impossible..."

"Hello, Doctor," Pamela said, her voice dripping with ice as she walked closer, stopping three feet in front of him. "It's been fourteen months. Do you remember me? Do you remember standing over my hospital bed, handing me three death certificates while I was too drugged to even sit up?"

"I... I don't know what you're talking about!" Vance stammered, pulling against the thick leather straps securing his wrists. "Mr. Voss, please! This is kidnapping! I am a respected surgeon! I will call the police!"

Roman walked over to a small metal table near the wall, picked up a heavy tablet, and tossed it onto Vance’s lap.

"Look at the screen, Harold," Roman commanded smoothly.

Vance looked down. On the screen were detailed offshore bank statements from an entity called Aegis Holdings Ltd. in the Cayman Islands. A transaction of three million dollars was highlighted in red—transferred on June 15th of the previous year, originating from Eleanor Voss’s private trust fund directly into Vance’s account.

"That is a paper trail," Roman whispered, leaning down until his face was inches from Vance’s ear. "Federal wire fraud. Human trafficking. Child abduction. Forgery of official state vital records. Medical malpractice."

Roman reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy fountain pen, placing it neatly on the table beside a blank sheet of affidavit paper.

"In thirty minutes, the FBI will receive this file," Roman said calmly. "You will spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary. You will lose your license, your wealth, your home, and your family. Unless... you tell us every single name involved in this operation."

Dr. Vance began to weep hysterically, his body shaking violently against the chair.

"It wasn't just me!" Vance sobbed, the dam breaking under the crushing weight of Roman’s evidence. "I swear to God, it wasn't just my idea! Eleanor Voss came to me six months before the birth! She offered me five million dollars! She said she had found a donor—a girl with no family, no powerful relatives, no money to fight back!"

Pamela felt a wave of nausea hit her, but she forced herself to stand firm. "You chose me because I was alone?"

"Yes!" Vance choked out. "You had no husband, no parents, no money! Eleanor’s team monitored your prenatal visits at the free clinic! They knew you were having triplets! They knew you were healthy! On the night of June 14th, we induced your labor artificially. We gave you high doses of sedatives to ensure you remained unconscious after delivery!"

"And my babies?" Pamela demanded, tears burning her eyes. "How did you move them?"

"We put them in transport incubators," Vance confessed, his head hanging low. "We signed the death certificates, registered them as stillborn, and transferred them through the private surgical elevator straight to Eleanor’s suite on the top floor. Eleanor was admitted under an alias. We falsified her birth records, stamped the hospital seal, and handed her the infants!"

"Who else?" Roman demanded, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "Who inside my family helped Eleanor coordinate this?"

Vance swallowed hard, looking up at Roman with eyes filled with dread.

"Your uncle..." Vance whispered. "Arthur Voss."

Roman froze.

"Arthur?" Roman asked, his voice deathly quiet.

"Arthur knew Eleanor was faking her pregnancy!" Vance revealed, gasping for air. "He found out three months before the birth! He used it to blackmail Eleanor! He told her that if she didn't help him funnel fifty million dollars out of the Voss Group real estate development fund, he would expose her fake pregnancy to you and the board!"

Pamela looked at Roman. His face had gone completely expressionless—a terrifying calm that presaged a catastrophic storm.

"Arthur didn't just know," Roman murmured to himself, the final piece of the puzzle falling into place. "Arthur coordinated Eleanor's car accident four months later when she threatened to tell me the truth."

Vance nodded frantically. "Yes! Eleanor wanted out! She was terrified! She told Arthur she was going to confess everything to you! Three days later, her car went over the guardrail on Lake Shore Drive!"

Roman stood up straight. He looked at Vance for a long, silent moment, then turned to his security chief, Vance.

"Keep him locked in this room," Roman ordered. "Get his full written confession signed and notarized by our legal team."

"And Arthur?" Vance asked.

Roman adjusted his cufflinks, his eyes gleaming with absolute, destructive resolve.

"Arthur is hosting the Annual Voss Group Shareholders Gala tonight at the Drake Hotel," Roman said smoothly. "He believes he is about to be voted in as Chairman of the Board. We are going to attend his party."
