Chapter 5 - The Immutable Record

The room fell into an uncomfortable, heavy silence. Several board members looked at Clara with disappointment, ready to write her off as an inexperienced hire who had crumbled under pressure.

Clara didn't panic. She didn't raise her voice.

Instead, she slowly stood up, smoothing down her tailored navy blazer. On her lapel, discreetly pinned alongside her corporate badge, was the small purple butterfly pin—a permanent replica of the sticker Lily had given her.

"Mr. Sterling," Clara said, her voice echoing clearly across the boardroom. "Thank you for bringing up the compliance report. However, you seem to have reviewed an offline draft."

Richard scoffed. "Draft? I pulled it directly from the centralized server at 11:14 PM on Friday!"

"Yes," Clara agreed calmly, picking up a remote control and clicking it toward the giant presentation screen behind Ethan. "And at 11:12 PM on Friday, our newly installed blockchain audit system logged an unauthorized administrative override originating from terminal IP address 192.168.4.12."

The screen flickered, displaying an immutable digital audit log. Bold red highlights showed the exact keystrokes, timestamp, and user credentials used to alter the figures.

Richard’s face visibly paled. "What... what is that?"

"When I took this role six months ago," Clara explained, looking directly at the board members, "my first initiative was to implement real-time, tamper-proof tracking software on all compliance documents to prevent internal fraud. When someone logged into my folder on Friday night using Senior Partner credentials, the system didn't just record the changes—it activated the terminal’s internal webcam."

Clara pressed the remote again.

A crystal-clear photograph appeared on the high-definition display showing Richard Sterling sitting at his office desk late Friday night, manually editing Clara’s compliance files while logged into his private account.

A collective gasp echoed through the room. Board members turned to stare at Richard in complete disgust.

"You... you set a trap for me!" Richard stammered, backing up against his chair, cold sweat breaking out across his forehead.

"No, Mr. Sterling," Clara replied softly, echoing the words she had spoken to a little girl six months ago. "I simply made sure that when someone did something wrong, somebody was looking."

Ethan stood up from his chair, his presence towering over the room.

"Richard," Ethan said, his voice laced with thunderous authority. "Corporate security and federal fraud investigators are waiting in your office right now. Your equity in this firm is frozen, and you are terminated for corporate sabotage and breach of fiduciary duty."

As security officers stepped into the boardroom to escort a ruined Richard Sterling away, the remaining board members stood up one by one, breaking into unanimous applause for Clara Bennett.
