Chapter 3 - An Unconventional Interview

Ethan’s private office was immense, featuring an panoramic view of Lake Michigan. Yet despite the imposing surroundings, the atmosphere inside became surprisingly warm.

A private assistant immediately brought in warm hot chocolate for Lily, a fresh pot of coffee, and a platter of pastries. Lily happily sat at a small glass side table, drawing butterflies on a notepad with highlighters.

Ethan sat across from Clara at the leather seating area, taking a long breath as the adrenaline of the morning finally began to wear off.

"I owe you more than I can ever express in words, Clara," Ethan said, looking directly into her eyes. "Lily is my entire world. Since her mother passed away three years ago, I have lived in constant fear of something happening to her. Today, my worst nightmare came true... and you were the guardian angel who stood in the gap."

Clara took a slow sip of the coffee, feeling the warmth spread through her fingers. "You don't owe me anything, Mr. Whitmore. Any decent person would have done the same."

"No," Ethan corrected firmly. "Dozens of people walked past her. You chose to stay, knowing full well it would cost you the job you needed."

He reached over to his desk and pulled up her digital file on an iPad. "I took a look at your resume while we were in the elevator. Top of your class at UIC, dual degree in Finance and Operational Logistics, working two jobs to support your mother’s medical treatment."

Clara looked down at her hands, feeling a sudden wave of self-consciousness. "My background isn't as prestigious as the Ivy League candidates you usually hire."

"Ivy League credentials teach people how to analyze spreadsheets," Ethan said softly. "They don't teach character, integrity, or quick crisis management under extreme pressure. You showed more leadership on a icy train platform at 8:00 AM than half the senior partners in this building show in a fiscal quarter."

He closed the file and looked at her intently. "The position you applied for was Junior Financial Analyst—a starting role at $58,000 a year."

Clara nodded. "Yes, sir."

"I am closing that position," Ethan said.

Clara’s heart sank for a fraction of a second, wondering if she had misread the moment.

"Because," Ethan continued, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips, "I am opening a new position. Assistant Director of Corporate Ethics and Community Investment. Starting salary is $110,000, full medical benefits covering family dependents, and an immediate sign-on bonus to handle your current family expenses."

Clara stared at him, completely rendered speechless. "Mr. Whitmore... I... I don't know what to say. Are you sure? Is this because of Lily?"

"It is because of who you are," Ethan replied smoothly. "Whitmore Capital manages billions of dollars, but we have lost our human touch—as Ms. Vance clearly demonstrated today. I need someone by my side who remembers what actually matters in the real world."

Lily ran over, holding up a drawing of three people holding hands under a giant purple butterfly. "Look, Daddy! It’s us and Clara!"

Ethan looked at the drawing, then back at Clara, his eyes shining with deep respect. "What do you say, Clara? Will you join us?"

Tears welled up in Clara’s eyes—tears of overwhelming relief for her mother, her future, and the quiet dignity of a choice well made.

"Yes," Clara whispered, a radiant smile breaking across her face. "Yes, I will."
