Chapter 5 - THE VOWS AT SUNSET

The wedding took place at seven o'clock on the cliffside terrace of the estate.

The San Francisco fog had rolled back, leaving a vast, twilight sky painted in shades of deep violet, burnt orange, and gold. Below us, the dark waters of the Pacific Ocean crashed rhythmically against the rocks.

There were no three hundred guests. No reporters. No fanfare.

Only a judge from the California Supreme Court, Vance, two security guards acting as official witnesses, and the two of us.

I walked down the stone pathway alone, the ocean breeze catching the long silk train of my ivory dress. White lilies lined the altar, their sweet fragrance filling the cold evening air.

Julian stood beneath a simple iron archway draped in white roses. He wore a midnight-blue tuxedo, his dark hair swept back, his posture immaculate. When he saw me walking toward him, something in his dark eyes shifted—a rare, vulnerable warmth that broke through his usual impenetrable quiet.

I stopped beside him under the archway.

The judge opened a black leather book. "We are gathered here today to unite Julian Mercer and Emma Calloway in holy matrimony..."

The words flowed past me like a dream.

Part of my brain was still trying to comprehend the sheer velocity of the last twenty-four hours. Yesterday morning, I was an exhausted, broke art gallery owner sneaking out of a cramped Boston apartment in the dark. Tonight, I was standing on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, preparing to bind my life to a powerful stranger.

"Do you, Julian Mercer, take Emma Calloway to be your lawfully wedded wife?" the judge asked.

Julian stepped closer to me. He took my right hand in his, his fingers warm and steady. He didn't look at the judge. He kept his eyes fixed entirely on mine.

"I take you, Emma," Julian said, his deep voice carrying over the sound of the crashing waves below. "To protect, to honor, and to hold. I vow that no harm will ever reach you under my roof, that no shadow will cross your light, and that your freedom will always be absolute within my heart."

My throat tightened. Those were not standard wedding vows. He had written them himself.

The judge turned to me. "And do you, Emma Calloway, take Julian Mercer to be your lawfully wedded husband?"

I looked at the gold ring sitting on the velvet cushion held by Vance. Then I looked into Julian's eyes.

I saw the man who had tracked down my abuser.

I saw the man who had paid my dead mother's lingering medical bills.

I saw the man who had bought out an entire first-class cabin just so I could sleep peacefully under a cashmere blanket without being disturbed.

Was he dangerous? Yes. Was he secretive? Absolutely.

But for the first time in two years, I didn't feel afraid. I felt protected.

"I do," I said clearly.

Julian picked up the emerald-cut diamond ring and slid it onto my finger. It fit perfectly, like it had been forged for my hand alone. I picked up a simple, heavy gold band and slid it onto his finger.

"By the authority vested in me by the State of California," the judge announced with a warm smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Julian hesitated for a second, giving me time to step back if I wanted to.

Instead, I took a small step forward.

Julian leaned down, slid his hand gently behind my neck, and brought his lips down to mine.

The kiss was soft at first, cautious, almost reverent—as if he were afraid I might shatter in his hands. But as I leaned into his chest, clutching the lapels of his tuxedo jacket, the kiss deepened into something powerful, warm, and electric, sending a surge of heat straight to my toes.

May you like

When he finally pulled back, his dark eyes were burning with an intensity that took my breath away.

"Welcome to my life, Mrs. Mercer," he whispered against my lips.
