Chapter 4 - DRESSES AND DAGGER THRUSTS

By four o'clock in the afternoon, the East Wing suite was transformed into a high-fashion showroom.

Racks of white, ivory, and champagne silk gowns filled the dressing room. Four quiet, efficient women in black aprons moved around me with measuring tapes, pins, and steam irons, while a stylist worked on my hair.

I stood on a velvet pedestal, staring at my reflection in a full-length gilded mirror.

The dress they had selected was breathtaking—a custom ivory silk column dress with a dramatic cowl neck, long fitted sleeves, and an open back that exposed the sharp line of my spine. It was understated, powerful, and impeccably elegant.

I looked like a queen preparing for an execution.

"Miss Calloway?"

I turned. Vance stood at the doorway holding a silver tray. On it sat a crystal glass of sparkling water and a small, cream-colored envelope sealed with red wax.

"A note from Mr. Mercer," Vance said, presenting the tray.

I took the envelope, my fingers trembling slightly as I broke the wax seal.

Emma,

Your stepfather’s old debt to the Boston Merchant Bank has been paid in full as of 3:15 PM today. The lien against your mother’s estate has been cleared. You owe nothing to anyone.

Tyler Bennett has been released on bail. As expected, his first call was to a local tabloid reporter. The story will break at midnight.

Wear the pearl earrings on the vanity. They belonged to my grandmother.

J.M.

I stared at the crisp, black ink of his handwriting.

He had wiped out eighty thousand dollars of lingering family debt with a single phone call. Something my stepfather had spent ten years running from, something that had crushed my mother's spirit until the day she died... Julian had erased it like a smudge on a whiteboard.

"Is he always like this?" I asked Vance quietly, gesturing to the note.

Vance paused, his hands folded neatly behind his back. "Mr. Mercer is a man of singular focus, Miss Calloway. When he sets his mind upon an objective, he does not recognize obstacles. He only recognizes timelines."

"I'm not an objective, Vance," I said, looking back at the mirror. "I'm a person."

"With respect, ma'am," Vance said softly, "I have worked for the Mercer family for thirty years. I saw Mr. Mercer lose his father when he was eighteen. I saw him take control of an empire surrounded by men who wanted to tear him apart. I have seen him cold, ruthless, and entirely unyielding."

Vance looked at me through the mirror's reflection.

"I have never seen him buy lilies," Vance added gently. "I have never seen him spend three hours reviewing the lighting design of a room just to ensure it wouldn't hurt a woman's eyes after a migraine. He may treat this like a campaign, Miss Calloway... but you are not just an objective to him."

Before I could process Vance's words, a loud commotion echoed from the floor below.

Shouting. The sound of shattered glass. A man's voice, raised in frantic, desperate anger.

"Emma! Emma, I know you're in here!"

My blood ran cold.

Tyler.

I stepped off the velvet pedestal, ignoring the gasps of the dressmakers as the long silk train dragged across the floor. I ran out of the suite, down the long carpeted hallway, and reached the marble balcony overlooking the grand foyer.

Below, the heavy iron front doors were hanging wide open.

Tyler Bennett stood in the center of the foyer, his leather jacket torn, his face pale and bruised from his night in jail. He was holding a heavy iron tire iron in his hand, breathing heavily, his eyes wild as he looked around the opulent mansion.

Standing ten feet away from him, completely unfazed, was Julian Mercer.

Julian hadn't pulled a gun. He hadn't called his security team, who were standing quietly in the shadows near the entrance, waiting for a single command.

Julian merely stood in his vest and rolled-up shirt sleeves, holding a silver pocket watch in his left hand.

"You have five seconds to drop that iron, Bennett," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.

"Where is she?!" Tyler screamed, raising the iron threateningly. "What did you do to her, you bastard?! She's my girlfriend! She belongs to me!"

"She is no one's property," Julian said smoothly. "Least of all yours."

"She ran away with my money!" Tyler raged, taking a step toward Julian. "She took eighteen hundred dollars out of my safe!"

"That money belonged to her gallery account, which you illegally accessed three weeks ago," Julian countered, his tone clinical, almost bored. "Furthermore, the eighteen hundred dollars has already been wired back to your frozen account, alongside a formal civil suit for domestic assault and grand larceny."

Tyler blinked, stunned by the sheer precision of Julian's words. "What... what are you talking about?"

"Look at yourself, Tyler," Julian said, stepping closer to him, ignoring the tire iron entirely. "You broke into a Presidio estate armed with a deadly weapon while on conditional bail. There are six security cameras recording your face right now. In approximately forty seconds, four squad cars from the San Francisco Police Department will pull into this driveway."

Julian looked down at his pocket watch.

"Three... two... one."

Right on cue, the distant wail of police sirens echoed through the open front doors, growing louder by the second.

Tyler's eyes went wide with sheer terror. He looked at the open doors, then at Julian, then up at the balcony where I was standing in my ivory wedding dress.

Our eyes met.

In his eyes, I saw the truth of what he had always been: a small, weak, frightened bully who relied on fear because he had nothing else.

"Emma..." Tyler whimpered, dropping the tire iron onto the marble floor with a loud, metallic clatter. "Emma, please... tell them it's a mistake! Tell them we're together!"

I looked down at him from the balcony.

For two years, this man had dictated what I wore, who I spoke to, how I felt, and when I cried. I had spent nights hiding in my own bathroom, shaking with fear because I heard his footsteps on the stairs.

I took a deep, steady breath, reached up to my earlobe, and clipped on the pearl earring Julian had left for me.

"It's over, Tyler," I said, my voice echoing clear and strong across the grand foyer. "Get out of my sight."

Four armed police officers burst through the front doors, tackling Tyler to the marble floor, forcing his arms behind his back, and snapping hand cuffs onto his wrists. He screamed my name as they dragged him out into the rain, but his voice was swallowed by the red and blue flashing lights of the cruiser.

The foyer went silent again.

Julian turned slowly, looking up at the balcony where I stood.

The afternoon sun broke through the high stained-glass windows, casting warm gold light across my ivory dress.

Julian looked at me—not as a syndicate boss, not as a powerful titan of industry, but as a man who was seeing something he had waited his whole life to touch.

"You look stunning, Emma," he said softly.

My heart skipped a beat. And for the first time since I woke up on that airplane... I didn't feel like running away.
