Chapter 4 - The Hunt for the Truth

The aftermath of the press conference was a global financial tsunami.

Within twenty-four hours, the story of The ICU Betrayal dominated every major news network across the world. Headlines blared from Bloomberg, CNBC, and the Financial Times:

VANCE GLOBAL TRUST CALLS IN $2.4B DEBT: GRANT HOLLOWAY FACES BANKRUPTCY AND CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION

Grant’s pristine social image was completely obliterated. The Montgomery family issued a public statement breaking off the engagement between Chloe and Grant, calling his actions "morally repugnant." The city’s high-society clubs revoked his memberships, and board members began resigning from Holloway International en masse.

Meanwhile, I had moved into a stunning, heavily secured penthouse suite overlooking Central Park, purchased through the Vance Estate.

Two nurses and a private pediatrician were on staff twenty-four hours a day, providing world-class care for Leo, Ethan, and Maya, who were finally discharged from the hospital, healthy, strong, and thriving.

Sitting in my sunlit study, I met with Victoria and Marcus Vance—my cousin and chief cyber-forensics investigator for Vance Global.

"Clara," Marcus said, opening his encrypted laptop and projecting a series of bank transactions onto a large wall monitor. "When we executed the debt call on Holloway International, we uncovered something far darker than just corporate greed."

I took a sip of herbal tea, my eyes narrowing. "What did you find, Marcus?"

"Grant didn't just want to divorce you to marry Chloe Montgomery," Marcus explained, pointing to a series of offshore transfers routed through Grand Cayman and Zurich. "Over the past two years, Grant and his mother, Beatrice Holloway, have been systematically siphoning money out of Holloway International’s pension funds and research development accounts—over $300 million."

"Where did the money go?" Victoria asked sharply.

"Into a private pharmaceutical holding company called Aegis Life Sciences," Marcus revealed. "Aegis was developing an experimental cardiac drug. Grant knew that your pregnancy with triplets carried a high risk of amniotic fluid embolism. He intentionally arranged for your primary obstetrician—a doctor named Dr. Harold Vance (no relation to us)—to be placed on Aegis’s payroll as a high-paid consultant."

My hand froze over my teacup. The air in the room suddenly turned dangerously thin.

"Are you telling me..." I whispered, my voice trembling with a horrifying realization, "...that my medical complication wasn't an accident?"

Marcus looked down at his screen, his expression deeply somber.

"Dr. Harold Vance administered an unapproved synthetic clotting agent to you four hours before your emergency C-section," Marcus said softly. "It was designed to trigger severe vascular distress—enough to induce cardiac arrest—making your death look like a natural, tragic childbirth complication."

Tears of pure, white-hot rage filled my eyes.

Grant hadn't just abandoned me while I was dying.

He and his mother had actively attempted to murder me to cover up their $300 million embezzlement scheme, ensuring that I would die on the table, leaving them free to claim my mother’s hidden trust assets as legal guardians of the triplets!

"Where is Dr. Harold Vance right now?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm, devoid of all fear.

"He tried to board a private jet to Switzerland two hours ago," Victoria smiled coldly. "Federal agents intercepted him at Teterboro Airport. He is currently in an interrogation room at the Manhattan Federal Building. And five minutes ago... he agreed to turn state's evidence against Grant and Beatrice Holloway in exchange for a plea deal."

I stood up from my desk, walking over to the glass window looking out over the city skyline.

"Call the United States Attorney," I ordered, my eyes flashing with absolute, unyielding resolve. "Tell him we are filing formal charges for Attempted Premeditated Murder, Corporate Embezzlement, and Medical Malpractice Fraud."

"And what about Grant?" Marcus asked.

"Grant is currently hiding in his father's estate in Long Island," I said smoothly. "He thinks he still has his family’s wealth to hide behind. Let's show him what happens when a lioness protects her cubs."
