Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Execution

The grand ballroom of the Holloway Tower in downtown Manhattan was packed to capacity with over three hundred high-society figures, financial journalists, corporate investors, and political heavyweights.
Glittering crystal chandeliers cast golden light over champagne towers and lavish floral arrangements. Massive digital screens displayed the sleek, gold logo of HOLLOWAY INTERNATIONAL.
At the front stage stood Grant Holloway.
He looked impeccable. Dressed in a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo, his hair styled to perfection, a brilliant, confident smile plastered across his face. Beside him stood Chloe Montgomery—a slim, polished blonde woman in a silk pink gown, wearing a six-carat diamond ring that Grant had purchased using funds from his personal corporate account.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Grant’s voice echoed powerfully through the high-end audio system, full of absolute, triumphant authority. "Today marks a new era for Holloway International. We are expanding our global footprint, securing our legacy, and moving forward with unwavering vision and strength!"
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.
Senator Richard Montgomery stood in the front row, beaming with pride, raising a glass of scotch toward his future son-in-law.
"As many of you know," Grant continued, playing his rehearsed role of the stoic, tragic leader, "leadership requires making difficult personal sacrifices. My past is behind me. I stand before you today focused entirely on the future—on growth, prosperity, and unshakeable success!"
"What a touching speech, Grant."
The voice wasn't loud, but it carried a razor-sharp, lethal clarity that sliced directly through the sound system.
Every head in the grand ballroom turned simultaneously toward the back entrance.
The heavy double oak doors swung open.
Walking down the center carpeted aisle was a vision that made the entire room lose its collective breath.
I wore an exquisite, floor-length black velvet gown that hugged my figure perfectly, concealing my surgical binder beneath pristine, elegant tailoring. My dark hair was swept up in a flawless chignon, my skin glowing, my lips painted a bold, blood-red hue.
Flanking me on my left was Victoria Sterling-Vance, holding a leather document case. Flanking me on my right were four uniformed federal marshals and two senior financial regulatory officials.
Gasps exploded across the room.
"Is that... is that his wife?!" a senior journalist from the Wall Street Journal gasped, frantically raising his camera.
"I thought she was in a coma! I thought she was dying!" another socialite whispered in shock.
Grant’s face drained of every ounce of color in less than two seconds. His confident, smug smile shattered completely. He gripped the edges of the podium so hard his knuckles turned white, his eyes wide with absolute horror as if he were staring at a ghost rising from the grave.
"Clara..." Grant stammered, his microphone picking up his trembling, panicked whisper. "What... what are you doing here?! Security! Get this woman out of here!"
Two heavy Holloway security guards stepped forward to intercept me.
Before they could take two steps, the two federal marshals stepped in front of them, displaying official badges and federal court orders. "Step back! Federal authority!"
The security guards instantly froze, stepping out of my path.
I walked steadily up the stairs of the main stage, my high heels clicking against the hardwood like the steady ticking of a death clock. I stopped right in front of Grant and Chloe Montgomery.
Chloe backed away two steps, her eyes wide with confusion and outrage. "Grant! Who is this crazy woman?! What is going on?!"
I didn't even grant Chloe a single glance. My eyes were locked onto Grant’s sweating, pale face.
"Hello, Grant," I said softly, my voice carrying clearly through the stage microphone. "Did you really think four minutes without a heartbeat was enough to get rid of me?"
"Clara... you’re supposed to be in the hospital," Grant stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead, ruining his pristine makeup. "This is a private corporate event! You have no legal standing to be here! We are divorced!"
"Yes, we are," I smiled—a cold, beautiful, terrifying smile. "You made sure of that three days ago while I was lying dying on an operating table, didn't you? You signed those papers in the ICU hallway, checked your watch, and walked away from your wife and your three newborn children."
The entire ballroom gasped in unison. Whispers erupted like a wildfire among the reporters. Flashbulbs began flashing frantically—snap, snap, snap!
"That's a private matter!" Grant yelled, panic lacing his voice as he looked desperately at the media cameras. "This is slander! You are emotionally disturbed!"
"I am completely sane, Grant," I replied smoothly. "And I am here to discuss business."
Victoria Sterling-Vance stepped up beside me, pulling a thick, gold-embossed legal document from her briefcase and placing it directly onto the podium in front of Grant.
"Mr. Holloway," Victoria announced loudly, her voice booming through the speakers. "I am Victoria Sterling-Vance, chief legal counsel for Vance Global Trust. As of 10:00 AM this morning, a formal Default Notice and Immediate Debt Acceleration Demand has been filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission against Holloway International."
Grant stared at the document as if it were a venomous snake. "Vance Global Trust...? What... what are you talking about?!"
"Vance Global Trust was founded by my mother, Eleanor Vance," I explained, leaning closer to him so the entire room could hear every word. "They hold $2.4 billion of your company's senior secured debt. And under Section 14-B of the master credit agreement, an emergency exit or fraudulent divorce executed by a Holloway executive triggers an immediate, 100% liquid debt call within seven business days."
Grant’s phone in his jacket pocket began ringing frantically. Then his secretary’s phone rang. Then the phones of every board member sitting in the front row began buzzing incessantly.
"Mr. Holloway!" Grant’s chief financial officer yelled from the front row, his face white as a sheet, looking up from his tablet in pure horror. "Our bank credit lines have just been frozen by the Federal Reserve! Vance Global has invoked an immediate asset freeze! All Holloway International trading has been halted on the New York Stock Exchange!"
The ballroom descended into absolute, chaotic bedlam.
Investors stood up shouting, reporters rushed the stage with cameras, and Senator Montgomery grabbed his daughter Chloe’s arm, yanked her away from Grant, and began dragging her toward the back exit in utter disgrace.
Grant stumbled back against the digital backdrop screen, his hands clutching his head, breathing heavily as if he were the one suffering a heart attack now.
"You... you destroyed me..." Grant gasped, looking at me with pure, trembling horror.
May you like
I leaned in, my red lips stopping inches from his ear.
"You left me to die in a cold hallway, Grant," I whispered, my voice smooth as silk and cold as ice. "I’m just returning the favor. You have seven days to find $2.4 billion. Good luck."
