Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

The county courtroom was packed to capacity at 11:00 AM.
News trucks had already gathered outside the courthouse after the Attorney General’s Office released a brief press statement announcing the arrest of a prominent local developer’s daughter and her husband for high-level elder abuse and fraud.
Julian and Chloe were brought out from the holding cells wearing bright orange prison jumpsuits, their hands and feet chained together.
Julian looked broken. His hair was messy, his eyes bloodshot from crying all night, his posture completely bowed under the weight of total disgrace. Chloe looked hysterical, her face stained with running mascara as she kept staring desperately at her father in the gallery.
Judge Arthur Thorne sat at the high bench, his expression dark and formidable as he reviewed the case file.
"We are here for the arraignment and bail hearing in the matter of State v. Julian Collins and Chloe Collins," Judge Thorne announced, his deep voice filling the courtroom. "Counsel, enter your appearances."
Sarah Jenkins stood up for the prosecution. "Sarah Jenkins for the State, Your Honor. The State is requesting that both defendants be held without bail pending trial."
Arthur Montgomery stood up slowly for the defense, looking exhausted. "Arthur Montgomery for the defense, Your Honor. My clients... wish to enter a formal plea."
The courtroom went dead silent.
Julian looked up at the judge, trembling violently.
"Mr. Collins, Mrs. Collins," Judge Thorne said, leaning over his bench. "How do you plead to the charges of First-Degree Elder Abuse, Aggravated Unlawful Imprisonment, and Grand Larceny?"
Julian choked back a sob, looking over at me sitting at the prosecution table. I looked at him with steady, unyielding eyes.
"G-Guilty, Your Honor," Julian whimpered, his voice barely audible.
"I didn't hear you, Mr. Collins," Judge Thorne barked sternly.
"Guilty!" Julian cried out, dropping his head to the table. "Guilty on all counts!"
Chloe burst into loud, ugly tears beside him. "Guilty..." she sobbed into her chained hands.
Gasps echoed through the gallery.
Judge Thorne slammed his gavel down once. THUD.
"The court accepts the guilty pleas," Judge Thorne declared, his voice booming with righteous anger. "In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen an act of cruelty as despicable, cowardly, and morally bankrupt as the one committed by these two defendants against their own flesh and blood."
He looked directly at Julian and Chloe, his eyes burning with absolute contempt.
"You stripped an innocent, vulnerable woman of her dignity, her safety, and her home out of pure, unadulterated greed," Judge Thorne continued. "You believed that because she was old, she was powerless. You were wrong."
He picked up his pen and signed the formal remand order.
"Pending formal sentencing next month, where this court intends to hand down the maximum allowable prison term under state law, both defendants are remanded to the county correctional facility without bail."
THUD.
"Furthermore," Judge Thorne added, "all assets belonging to the defendants are immediately frozen and placed under the receivership of Assistant Attorney General Elena Vance for complete restitution and asset liquidation for the benefit of Evelyn Collins."
THUD.
As the bailiffs stepped forward to haul Julian and Chloe away, Chloe screamed out toward her father, "Dad! Help me! Please! Don't let them take me!"
Richard Reed simply turned his head away in shame, unable to look at his daughter as she was led down the dark hallway into the holding cells.

Julian looked at me one last time as the heavy steel doors opened to receive him. Tears were streaming down his face, his mouth moving silently to form the word 'sorry'.
I didn't answer. I didn't smile. I simply stood up, picked up my briefcase, and walked out of the courtroom into the warm afternoon sun.
