Chapter 6 - A New Foundation

Six months later, the damp, miserable service kitchen at the back of the mansion was completely gone. In its place stood a beautiful, sunlit greenhouse filled with blooming jasmine and fresh herbs—a place Sarah had designed herself.

The mansion no longer felt like a monument to my absence. It felt like a home.

The polished marble floors echoed not with the fake laughter of wealthy strangers, but with the loud, joyous giggles of a healthy, thriving six-year-old boy. Jamie had gained weight, his cheeks were rosy and full, and he was currently running across the living room carpet, flying a toy airplane I had bought him.

"Daddy! Watch this!" he yelled, doing a loop-de-loop with the plane.

"Outstanding flight, captain!" I laughed, catching him as he wrestled into my arms. The bond we had lost over five years was fully restored, forged in the safety of a father who would never let him hurt again.

Sarah walked out of the kitchen, carrying a tray of fresh, warm cookies. She wore a beautiful yellow sundress, her hair flowing freely, her eyes bright and filled with a peace I hadn't seen since the day we got married. She looked at me, and a soft, beautiful smile crossed her lips.

"The lawyers called, Leo," she said, setting the tray down and wrapping her arms around my neck. "The final audit is complete. Every single cent your mother stole has been officially recovered from the liquidation of her old assets. We're completely clear."

"Good," I said, pulling her close and kissing her forehead. "But the money doesn't matter, Sarah. This house doesn't matter. Only you two do."

"I know," she whispered, leaning her head against my chest. "We're safe now."

I looked out the grand window at the beautiful backyard. Five years of vicious heat, dust, and sweat had been a heavy price to pay, and the betrayal of my own blood had nearly broken us. But standing here in the warmth of the home we had reclaimed, holding the wife and son I had fought so hard to save, I knew the battle was over.

The monsters were left in the cold, justice had been served, and the foundation we were building now was unbreakable. We were finally home.
