Chapter 4 - The Eviction

The next morning, the sun rose over Bayside Heights, casting a bright, unforgiving light on the grand estate. At exactly 8:00 AM, a sleek black sedan pulled up the driveway. Out stepped Marcus Vance, the top real estate and forensic attorney in the state, whom I had called at dawn.

Inside the foyer, Gertrude and Prudence stood with two small suitcases—the only belongings I allowed them to take from the house.

"Everything is finalized, Leo," Marcus said, handing me a notarized folder. "The quitclaim deed has been filed with the county. The property is now one hundred percent in Sarah’s name. Furthermore, we’ve frozen the remaining balance in your mother's personal accounts as restitution for the stolen monthly stipends."

Gertrude looked at me, her eyes filled with venom. "You're throwing your own mother out onto the street? After everything I did to raise you?"

"You didn't raise a son, Gertrude. You raised a cash cow," I replied coldly. "And the moment I turned my back, you tried to slaughter my family. You're lucky I'm letting you walk out of here instead of leaving in the back of a police cruiser."

"Where are we supposed to go?" Prudence cried, clutching her designer bag. "We have no money! No place to live!"

"I don't care," I said, opening the massive front door. The cool morning air rushed into the foyer, smelling of pine and freedom. "But you don't belong here anymore. Get out."

They walked out the door, their heels clicking against the stone steps, looking utterly defeated as they dragged their small suitcases down the long driveway. They had entered this house as queens ruling over an empire built on pain, and they were leaving it as beggars.

As the heavy oak doors shut behind them, I felt a massive weight lift from my chest. The cancer had been cut out. Now, the healing could begin.
