Chapter 3 - The Cover-Up Unravels

Within twenty minutes, two squad cars arrived at Cedar Rapids Memorial Hospital.
When Diane saw the officers approaching her in the lobby, her facade of tragic motherhood completely collapsed into desperate aggression.
"This is ridiculous!" she screamed, her voice echoing off the glass walls as patrons turned to stare. "I am a grandmother! I was taking care of a lazy girl who refused to get out of bed! My son is being manipulated by that gold-digger!"
"Ma'am, calm down," Officer Miller stated sternly. "Your daughter-in-law has visible physical trauma consistent with restraint, and your grandson is currently admitted to the ICU with severe dehydration and a 103-degree fever."
"She did that to herself!" Brittany yelled, her face flushing red with panic. "She hit her own arms! She's crazy!"
"Is that so?" Officer Miller pulled out a plastic evidence bag containing a rose-gold smartphone. "We retrieved this from your purse during the pat-down, Miss Carter. It belongs to Hannah Carter. Care to explain why her phone was hidden in your bag with the battery removed?"
Brittany opened her mouth, but no words came out.
While the officers handcuffed my mother and sister in the hospital lobby, I went upstairs to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Through the glass, I watched the nurses attach a tiny IV line to little Noah’s arm. His small chest rose and fell as fluids slowly restored his frail body.
The doctor walked out, looking exhausted but offering a small, reassuring smile. "We caught the infection just in time, Ethan. The fever is dropping. He's a fighter. He's going to be okay."

I leaned my forehead against the cool glass, letting out a breath I felt like I had been holding for days.
My son was going to survive. My wife was safe. Now, it was time to tear down everything my toxic family had built on lies.
