Chapter 1 - The Mark of Betrayal

The five words hung in the sterile hospital air, heavy and absolute: “You need to call the police.”
My world shattered in an instant. I looked down at Hannah’s delicate wrists. Beneath the harsh fluorescent lights of the emergency room, the dark, purplish rings were unquestionable. They weren't from a fall or a clumsy struggle. They were the distinct, terrifying marks of human fingers pressing down with malicious force.
"Ethan..." Hannah’s voice was a frail rasp, barely audible over the hum of the heart monitors. She tried to reach for me, but the movement caused her to wince in pain. "They wouldn't let me leave the bed..."
My mother, Diane, pushed her way past the curtain, her face contorted into a mask of theatrical grief. "Oh, don't listen to her, Ethan! She fell while trying to carry Noah! I tried to catch her by her arms—that’s how those marks got there! I was trying to save your child!"
Behind her, my sister Brittany nodded frantically, her hands shoved deep into her pockets. "Yeah, Ethan! She was delirious from the fever! She almost dropped Noah! Mom was just protecting him!"
"Shut up," I whispered.
"Ethan, how dare you speak to your mother like—"
"I SAID SHUT UP!" I roared, stepping between my mother and Hannah’s bed. The sheer violence in my voice shocked the room into utter silence. Even the attending nurses paused. "You lied to me for three days. You took her phone. You let my newborn son burn with a fever while you slept on my couch surrounded by trash!"
The ER doctor stepped smoothly between me and my mother, signaling two hospital security guards standing near the hallway. "Ma'am, you and your daughter need to step out into the waiting area immediately. This is a medical evaluation room."
"I have every right to be here! That's my grandson!" Diane shrieked, but the guards showed no hesitation. They firmly escorted a furious Diane and a silent, suddenly nervous Brittany into the corridor.

I dropped to my knees beside Hannah’s bed, taking her cold, trembling hand in mine. My tears fell onto her bruised skin. "Hannah... baby... please tell me what happened. Tell me everything."
Hannah looked at me, her dark eyes filled with a mixture of profound exhaustion and deep heartbreak. "The moment you drove away, Ethan... the front door locked. And the nightmare began."
