Chapter 6 - The New Horizon

Six months later, the clinic opened its doors. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by thousands—nurses, patients, and survivors of family abuse. I stood on the stage, the wind blowing through my hair, looking out at a crowd that finally saw me for who I was, not who I was expected to be.

My sister, Lena, was in the back of the crowd. She looked worn, older, and humbler. She didn't approach the stage; she just stood there, watching.

I didn't feel triumph, and I didn't feel hate. I felt lightness.

After the event, I walked to the edge of the park where the clinic stood. A car pulled up. It was Paul, my attorney, but he wasn't there for business. He held a travel brochure for a trip to the Alps.

"You've been standing on your own for a long time, Audrey," he said, smiling. "Maybe it's time you stood somewhere else for a while."

I looked at the clinic, then at the city that had once tried to break me, and finally at the open road ahead.

"I think I’d like that," I said.

I climbed into the car, leaving the grocery bag of my old life far behind. I was finally, truly, and happily independent. And for the first time in my life, the future didn't belong to my family's needs—it belonged entirely to me.
