Chapter 1 - The Paper Trail of Greed

As I sat in the driver’s seat of my aging sedan, the glow from my phone illuminated my face, casting long, sharp shadows across the interior. The document from my attorney wasn't just a financial report; it was a forensic accounting of the "family funds."

My pulse drummed against my temples as I scanned the line items. Derek hadn't just been living off my paycheck; he had been systematically liquidating my late father’s estate. He had forged my mother’s signature on secondary mortgages, laundered money through a failing logistics company, and—most chillingly—had been siphoning the money I sent home for my mother’s "medication" into an offshore gambling account in Panama.

They hadn't just evicted me. They had squeezed the orange until there was nothing left but peel, and now, they were discarding the husk.

"You're twenty-eight, Audrey. Stand on your own," I whispered, mimicking Derek's patronizing tone. A cold, sharp smile formed on my lips. Oh, I’ll stand on my own, Derek. And you’re going to be looking up from the dirt while I do it.

I started the car and drove three blocks away, pulling into a dimly lit parking lot. I opened my email and sent one message to Paul Whitaker: “They think I’m destitute. Let them keep thinking it for exactly forty-eight hours. Then, initiate the ‘Liquidation Clause’ on the house.”

I then opened Facebook. My sister, Lena, had already posted a photo of the new lock, captioned: “Out with the old, in with the new. Sometimes you have to make hard choices to protect your peace. #FreshStart #FamilyFirst.”

The algorithm, hungry for the manufactured drama, had already pushed the post to the top of our community’s feed. Neighbors were commenting with hearts and “So brave” messages. I typed a short reply: “Interesting way to describe an illegal eviction, Lena. See you in court.”

I hit send and immediately blocked her. The chaos was about to begin.
