Chapter 5 - The Desperate Move

"Based on the overwhelming evidence of financial fraud, emotional abuse, and extreme neglect," the judge declared, "this court grants sole, permanent physical and legal custody of Jonah and Elise Vance to their mother, Callie Vance. Russell Harlan’s visitation rights are completely denied. Furthermore, all marital assets are returned to Mrs. Vance, and Mr. Harlan is ordered to pay full legal fees."
A cheer went up from the gallery.
Russell stood frozen as handcuffs were slipped onto his wrists by bailiffs waiting in the courtroom. He was being arrested on the spot for financial fraud and perjury.
As he was being led away, he locked eyes with Callie. She looked at him with nothing but pity.
"This isn't over, Callie!" Russell screamed, struggling against the officers. "You think you won? You'll pay for this!"
Three months passed. Russell was released on a high bail, awaiting his final sentencing. He had lost everything. His name was trash, his company was bankrupt, and he was living in a run-down apartment on the docks.
One evening, driven mad by bitterness, Russell decided to make one final, desperate gamble. He knew Callie’s routine. Every Tuesday, she took the twins to a private clinic in the city for their pediatric check-up.
Disguising himself in a heavy raincoat and a baseball cap, Russell slipped into the clinic’s parking garage. He watched as Callie’s black SUV pulled into her reserved spot.
Callie got out, carrying Jonah in a car seat, while her security guard carried Elise.
Russell waited for the perfect moment. As the security guard turned to lock the car doors, Russell lunged out from behind a concrete pillar. He grabbed Callie from behind, pulling a pocket knife from his jacket.
"Give me the boy!" Russell hissed into her ear, pressing the blade close to her neck. "Give me the kid, Callie! Or I swear to God, I'll end this right now!"
Callie froze, her heart hammering against her ribs. But she didn't panic. She looked at the reflection of the garage ceiling in the car window.
"Russell," Callie said, her voice incredibly calm. "You really haven't learned anything, have you?"
"Shut up! Tell your guard to back off!" Russell screamed, his eyes wild with mania.
"I don't need to tell him anything," Callie whispered.
Suddenly, a red laser dot appeared on Russell’s chest. Then another on his forehead.
From the shadows of the parking garage, four highly trained tactical security officers emerged, their weapons trained directly on Russell. Colonel Whitaker stepped forward from the elevator lobby, holding a heavy-duty taser.

"Drop the knife, Russell," the Colonel said, his voice cold as ice. "You are outnumbered, outgunned, and out of chances."
Russell looked around, realizing he was completely trapped. The knife slipped from his trembling hand and clattered onto the concrete floor. He fell to his knees, sobbing hysterically as the officers slammed him onto the ground and cuffed him.
