Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Whisper

Vincent's breath was warm against my ear, but the words he spoke felt like absolute ice.

"Your fiancé didn't buy that engagement ring on your finger, Julianne. He pledged his soul to my organization to pay for it, and his time is up."

Before I could even process the weight of his words, we reached the base of the grand marble staircase. Ryan looked as though he wanted to sink into the floorboards. His hands were shaking so violently that the champagne glass he was holding clinked against his signet ring. Beside him, Chloe’s smug smile had completely vanished, replaced by an uncomfortable, shifting panic.

"Mr... Mr. Moretti," Ryan stammered, frantically stepping away from Chloe, his voice dropping an octave as he tried to sound composed. "I didn't know you were attending tonight. We didn't receive your RSVP."

"I don't RSVP to events held in buildings I own, Ryan," Vincent said, his voice smooth, commanding, and terrifyingly calm. He didn't look at Ryan; his focus remained entirely on me, his hand still resting gently against the small of my back. "And I certainly don't miss an opportunity to meet the woman who single-handedly saved your family's foundation from bankruptcy this year."

Chloe, trying to regain her usual center of attention, took a step forward, smoothing her red silk dress. "Mr. Moretti, I'm Chloe, Julianne's sister. Ryan and I were just discussing the layout for the—"

"I don't care who you are," Vincent interrupted, his eyes shifting to Chloe for a fraction of a second, cold enough to freeze the air between them. "I am speaking to your sister. And your employer."

Ryan’s face turned an even deeper shade of translucent white. "Julianne... sweetheart," he ventured, his eyes pleading with me. "Why are you standing with Mr. Moretti? Let's go to the VIP lounge. We need to talk about the keynote speech."

"The speech I wrote for you, Ryan?" I asked, the heartbreak finally hardening into a fierce, protective anger. I looked at the man who had shared my bed for three years, then at the sister I had protected since childhood. "The speech you were practicing in the service hallway twenty minutes ago while your hands were in Chloe's hair?"

The silence that followed was heavy. Around us, several prominent donors leaned in closer, pretending to inspect the floral arrangements while soaking in every detail of the impending trainwreck.
