Chapter 7 - Shadows of TreasonThe revelation echoed through the room like a thunderclap. Lily stared at Dr. Julian Vance, her mind trying to process the word uncle. She had spent two years on the cold, indifferent streets of the city, believing she was entirely alone in the world—and now, the very doctor who had saved Noah’s life in Trauma Bay 1 was her own mother’s brother.

"My... my uncle?" Lily whispered, her small voice trembling.
Julian gently took her tiny hands into his own, weeping openly. "Yes, Lily. Your mother, Clara, was my elder sister. When she left our family home eight years ago, we searched everywhere for her. But our grandfather had hired investigators who covered up her whereabouts due to an old family feud over our estate inheritance. When she passed away... we never knew she had left a daughter behind."
Daniel stood up, his mind spinning at the incredible twist of fate. "Julian... you mean to tell me that of all the hospitals in the city, Lily ran into the exact emergency room where her own uncle was working as the chief trauma surgeon?"
"Miracles don't happen by accident, Mr. Carter," Detective Reed said quietly from the doorway, a solemn smile on his face. "Sometimes the universe has a way of guiding lost feet to where they belong."
However, the joyful reunion was suddenly cut short by a heavy knock on the door. Two armed police officers stepped into the room, their expressions grim.
"Detective Reed," one of the officers said urgently. "We have a major problem downtown. Vanessa Albright’s legal team just filed an emergency injunction. They’re claiming the hospital security footage was tampered with and modified by Dr. Vance to frame her."
Daniel’s eyes flashed with anger. "Tampered with?! I saw the video with my own eyes!"
"Vanessa’s family owns a heavy stake in the municipal telecom network," the officer explained. "Her lawyers brought in a high-profile digital forensics expert who is claiming the video file lacks legal digital signatures. They’re attempting to throw the video out of court evidence. If the judge grants the motion at the preliminary hearing tomorrow morning, Vanessa could be released on bail within twenty-four hours!"
Lily shrank back into her pillows, fear returning to her eyes. "Is... is the scary lady coming back?"
Daniel turned to Lily, kneeling beside her bed, his voice filled with absolute resolve. "No, Lily. I promised you that nobody will ever hurt you again. I mean it."
Daniel looked at Dr. Vance and Detective Reed. "Vanessa thinks her wealth and corporate connections can buy her way out of attempted murder. She thinks she can destroy the truth just because Lily is a helpless street child without a voice."
"What are you going to do, Daniel?" Julian asked, wiping his eyes and standing up.
"Vanessa’s corporate syndicate is holding an emergency board meeting tomorrow morning at the Carter Global Headquarters to force a vote on my removal," Daniel said, his jaw locked in determination. "They think they hold all the cards. But they don't know that I’ve been running my own private investigation into her financial accounts for the past forty-eight hours."
Daniel reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a small black USB drive.
"Vanessa didn't just try to eliminate Noah to take over my company," Daniel revealed, his tone icy cold. "She’s been siphoning millions of dollars from the Brookstone Children’s Orphanage Fund for three years—the very fund that was supposed to provide shelter, food, and shoes for street children like Lily."
Lily looked at the tiny black drive in Daniel’s hand. "She took the money for the children?"
"Yes, sweetie," Daniel said softly, touching her hair. "She took the money that was meant to keep you warm and safe. But tomorrow morning, we are going to make sure she pays back every single cent."
"I'm coming with you," Dr. Vance declared firmly. "As Lily’s blood relative and as the attending physician, I will testify against her in court."
"No," Daniel said, looking at both Julian and Lily. "We don't just need medical testimony. The board of directors and the press need to see the truth from the person who actually lived it. Lily... are you brave enough to stand in a big room and tell everyone what you saw?"
May you like
Lily looked at Noah, who was holding her hand tightly, then at her bandaged feet, and finally at Daniel’s fierce, protective eyes.
She took a deep breath, puffed out her chest, and nodded firmly. "I carried Noah two kilometers barefoot, mister. I am not scared of that lady anymore."
