Chapter 3 - The Broken TabletNight fell over the city, covering the glass skyscrapers in a shroud of fog and low light. Inside the pediatric ICU of Brookstone Private Hospital, the quiet hum of heart monitors provided the only sound. Noah was asleep, an oxygen tube resting under his nose, his pale skin slowly returning to a healthy tone.

Daniel sat in a plush armchair beside the bed, holding his son’s tiny, limp hand. He hadn't slept for hours.
The door opened softly, and Dr. Julian Vance walked in holding a tablet device wrapped in a clear plastic evidence bag.
"How is he doing, Mr. Carter?" Dr. Vance asked softly.
"He’s breathing on his own now," Daniel said, his voice heavy with exhaustion. "Doctor... I don't know how to thank you. You saved his life."
"I stabilized him, Mr. Carter," Dr. Vance replied, pulling up a chair opposite Daniel. "But the person who saved his life is currently sitting in a cold cell at the precinct."
Daniel’s jaw tightened. "She’s a criminal. She took advantage of my son."
"Is she?" Dr. Vance took the tablet out of his pocket. "Before you make up your mind, you need to see something. Our hospital security system covers not just the interior, but also the outdoor parking lots and the perimeter surrounding the Brookstone Public Park across the boulevard."
Daniel looked at the doctor, confused. "What are you showing me?"
"When the paramedics brought Noah in, I noticed something strange about the young girl’s story versus your fiancée’s statement," Dr. Vance said calmly, tapping the screen of the tablet. "Your fiancée claimed she was at the park café buying water when Noah disappeared. She claimed the homeless girl snatched him."
"Yes," Daniel said defensively. "Vanessa was hysterical when she called me."
"Take a look at this footage," Dr. Vance said, handing the tablet to Daniel.
The video screen lit up. It was high-definition security footage taken from a high-angle camera mounted on the roof of the private clinic overlooking the edge of the park. Time stamp: 2:14 PM.
Daniel watched the screen intently.
On the video, Vanessa was sitting on a park bench under a large tree. Noah was playing on the grass nearby. A few moments later, a man wearing a dark jacket and a baseball cap walked up to Vanessa. They didn't argue. In fact, Vanessa smiled, stood up, and handed the man a thick manila envelope.
Then, the man pulled a small container from his pocket and handed it to Vanessa. Vanessa knelt down next to Noah, took a small biscuit from her purse, spread something on it, and forced Noah to eat it.
Daniel’s blood turned to ice. "What... what is she doing?"
"Watch," Dr. Vance whispered.
Within two minutes of eating the biscuit, the boy on the screen began to struggle for breath. He fell onto the grass, his body convulsing.
Instead of helping him, Vanessa stood up calmly. The man in the jacket grabbed her arm, and together they walked toward a dark sedan parked at the curb. They got into the car and pulled away, leaving six-year-old Noah lying alone in the grass, suffocating.
Daniel gasped for air, his eyes wide with horror and utter betrayal. "No... no, this can't be... She left him? She gave him something?"
"Keep watching," Dr. Vance said gently.
Time stamp: 2:18 PM.
From the far side of the screen, near a fountain, a tiny figure ran into the frame. It was Lily. Her wooden box of marzipan candies bounced wildly around her neck. She dropped her box onto the grass, fell beside Noah, and tried to help him sit up. When she realized he wasn't breathing, she lifted the boy onto her back and ran.
The camera caught her desperate run across the street. Her cheap sandals slipped off in a puddle of mud near the drain, but she didn't even look back. Barefoot, her feet cutting into the rough asphalt, she ran with every ounce of strength in her tiny body directly toward the hospital doors.
Daniel stared at the screen, tears streaming down his face, dropping onto the glass of the tablet.
“What did you do to my son?” The words he had screamed at Lily echoed back into his own mind, crushing his heart like a vice. He remembered grabbing her tiny bruised arm, yelling at her while officers slammed handcuffs onto her wrists. He remembered her small, soft whisper as she was dragged away: “Please tell him... we got here in time...”
"My God..." Daniel sobbed, burying his face in his hands. "My God... what have I done?"
"There's more," Dr. Vance said, pulling a small silver charm out of his coat pocket and placing it next to the tablet. "This fell off your fiancée’s designer bag during the commotion in the lobby earlier. And when we ran a rapid toxicology report on the residue from Noah’s mouth, we found concentrated peanut oil mixed with a heavy chemical sedative. This was an intentional attempt to cause severe medical distress."
Daniel stood up so fast his chair fell backward. The shock had turned into a burning, unstoppable rage.
"Where is Vanessa right now?" Daniel asked, his voice shaking with absolute fury.
"She left thirty minutes ago," Dr. Vance replied. "She told the front desk she was going home to 'rest' after the traumatic experience."

Daniel looked at his sleeping son, then at the silver charm, and finally at the frozen image on the tablet screen showing a barefoot little girl carrying his child across a sun-scorched street.
"Call my head of security," Daniel commanded, his hands clenching into tight fists. "And get Detective Reed on the line immediately. I need to make a full confession... and I need to save the girl who saved my life."
