Chapter 6 - A Sweet Beginning

Six months later.

The afternoon sun fell warmly across the manicured lawns of the Vance Maritime Estate—a grand historic property overlooking the harbor that Meredith had successfully reclaimed and restored.

In the backyard, a small, intimate gathering of true friends sat at garden tables adorned with fresh white roses and silver ribbons. There were no forty-seven fake guests, no cameras chasing cruelty, and no cruel mothers-in-law whispering in corners.

In the center of the lawn stood a massive, four-tiered chocolate cake decorated with sugar flowers.

Rosie, now five years old, ran across the grass wearing a shiny gold crown that sat straight on her curls. She giggled as Edmund Cross caught her in his arms, swinging her up onto his shoulders so she could reach the high branches of the willow tree.

Meredith stood near the porch, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching them with a warm, quiet peace in her heart.

Edmund walked over, lowering Rosie gently back onto the grass so she could run off to play with her friends. He adjusted his suit jacket and stood beside Meredith, looking out over the harbor.

"Everything ready for the board meeting tomorrow, Captain Vance?" Edmund asked with a soft smile.

"Everything is ready," Meredith replied, looking up at him. "The new maritime scholarship fund in my father's name launches at noon."

She looked at Edmund—the man who hadn't tried to save her like a knight in shining armor, but had simply given her the shield she needed to reclaim her own strength.

"Thank you, Edmund," she said softly. "For standing by the fence that day."

Edmund turned to her, his dark eyes filled with deep, genuine admiration. He reached out, gently taking her hand in his.

"I didn't stay because I wanted to save you, Meredith," Edmund said quietly. "I stayed because I knew, the second you looked at your daughter with frosting on your face, that you were the strongest woman I would ever meet."

Rosie came running back, holding a paper plate with a small piece of chocolate cake, offering a fork to her mother.

"Mommy, try it!" Rosie cheered, her eyes shining with pure joy. "It's super sweet!"

Meredith knelt down, took a tiny bite, and smiled—a real, radiant smile that reached all the way to her eyes.

"Yes, baby," Meredith whispered, pulling her daughter and Edmund into a warm embrace under the afternoon sun. "It's very sweet."
