Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

At 10:00 AM the following morning, Bradley Norton walked into the executive boardroom of Cross Enterprises wearing a three-thousand-dollar suit. Beside him sat his mother, Pamela, and his lead attorney.

Bradley was practically beaming. The fifty-million-dollar funding deal from Edmund Cross was going to elevate Norton Development into the major leagues.

"Mr. Cross will be with you shortly," the receptionist said politely before stepping out and closing the heavy frosted-glass doors.

"I told you everything was fine, Mother," Bradley gloated, adjusting his silk tie. "Meredith took the kid to a cheap motel last night. Let her cool off for a few days. Once she realizes she can't buy groceries without my card, she'll come crawling back on her knees."

Pamela patted his knee affectionately. "Just make sure she signs the marital waver before you let her back in the house, darling. Tanya says the video from yesterday already has fifty thousand views online. People love the 'spoiled wife gets humbled' narrative."

The boardroom doors opened.

Edmund Cross stepped inside. But he wasn't alone.

Walking beside him, wearing a tailored navy wool suit, her hair styled in an elegant chignon, and her father's silver anchor pendant gleaming against her throat, was Meredith.

Bradley’s smile vanished instantly. He stood up so fast his leather chair rolled back into the wall. "Meredith? What the hell are you doing here? Who let you in—"

"Sit down, Mr. Norton," Edmund said. His voice wasn't raised, but the sheer weight of authority in it forced Bradley back into his seat.

Pamela glared at Meredith with sneering contempt. "Meredith, if you think coming here to embarrass my son in front of his primary investor is going to gain you leverage—"

"Pamela," Meredith interrupted quietly, setting a slender manila folder on the glass conference table. "Shut up."

Pamela gasped, clutching her pearls. "How dare you—"

"In this folder," Edmund stated, taking his seat at the head of the table while Meredith sat calmly at his right hand, "are the forensic accounting audits of Vance Maritime & Logistics from 2021 through the present day."

Bradley’s face drained of all color. "I... I don't know what you're talking about. That was a routine bankruptcy liquidation—"

"It was grand larceny, asset stripping, and federal wire fraud," Meredith said, her voice completely steady, her eyes locked on her husband. "You didn't just steal my father's money, Bradley. You used my stolen inheritance as collateral to secure the initial loans for Norton Development."

"That's a lie!" Bradley shouted, turning frantically to his attorney. "Tell them this is absurd!"

The attorney looked at the documents Edmund had placed on the table, scanned the first page bearing the seal of the Federal Fraud Bureau, and slowly closed the folder. The attorney leaned over to Bradley and whispered, "Shut your mouth right now, Bradley."
