Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of Pride

At precisely seven-twenty-eight PM, the heavy mahogany desk phone in the corner of the grand salon rang.
Roman stepped over, putting the call on speaker.
"Mr. Duca," a crisp, Swiss-accented voice spoke through the speaker. "This is Director Weber from Zurich Financial Safeguards. The unencrypted forensic audit for Transfer Protocol 884-D is complete."
Hannah walked over to the desk, standing beside Roman. "Director Weber, this is Hannah Duca. Please read the primary authorization origin for the record."
"Understood, Mrs. Duca," Weber replied, the sound of papers turning audible over the line. "The primary authorization originated at 14:02 CST from a hardware key registered to Attorney Nicholas Vale. Secondary bypass codes were pulled manually from master logbook entry 412. The destination account was an offshore shell entity registered under the name Aegis Holdings Ltd, owned solely by Nicholas Vale."
Weber paused before adding, "We have also confirmed that Mrs. Hannah Duca executed a defensive vault override at 15:58 CST, successfully freezing the entire eight million dollars in a neutral, interest-bearing escrow account. The funds are 100% secure and will be returned to the Duca Children's Medical Foundation within the hour."
Roman looked at his mother.
Bianca stood near the desk, her face pale, listening to every word of the official confirmation that sealed her nephew's fate and proved her daughter-in-law's absolute innocence.
"Thank you, Director Weber," Roman said calmly. "Send the certified report directly to the federal prosecutor’s office in Chicago."
"It is already done, Mr. Duca. Good evening."
The line went dead.
Seconds later, heavy headlights flashed through the tall glass windows of the estate. Two black sedans belonging to the Federal Bureau of Investigation pulled up the long, snow-covered driveway, escorted by Roman’s private security detail.
Marcus led the agents down to the basement study. Ten minutes later, Nicholas Vale was led out through the main foyer in handcuffs, his head hanging low, his high-society career and freedom permanently stripped away.
The front door closed with a heavy, final thud.
The mansion was quiet now. The storm outside had begun to ease, soft white flakes falling gently over the frozen estate.
Bianca walked slowly into the foyer, where Roman and Hannah stood near the grand staircase.
She looked at Hannah for a long moment. Then, slowly, painfully, the proud matriarch of the Duca family did something no one had ever seen her do in her sixty-eight years of life.
Bianca fell to her knees on the marble floor.
"Mother!" Roman exclaimed, reaching out.
"No, Roman," Bianca sobbed, waving his hand away, her eyes fixed entirely on Hannah. "Let me stay here."
She looked up at Hannah, her hands trembling as she reached out toward the younger woman.
"I called you an outsider," Bianca wept, her voice trembling with raw, unfiltered remorse. "I mocked your family. I mocked your figure. I treated you like a nobody who stumbled into my son's wealth. And when I lost my temper... I struck you."
Tears dripped off Bianca's chin onto the pristine marble floor.
"You saved my life tonight, Hannah. You saved my reputation, my foundation, and my freedom. And you did it while I was destroying you. Please... if there is any mercy in your heart... forgive an arrogant, foolish old woman."
Hannah looked down at the kneeling matriarch.
She did not gloat. She did not raise her voice.
Hannah leaned down, wrapped her strong, warm arms around Bianca’s shoulders, and pulled her mother-in-law up off the cold marble floor.

"I didn't do it just for the family name, Bianca," Hannah said softly, wiping a tear from the older woman's cheek. "I did it because you are Roman’s mother. And in my world... family doesn't give up on each other, even when they're angry."
Bianca buried her face in Hannah's neck, crying openly as she hugged the woman she had spent eighteen months pushing away.
