Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the Grand Salon

The grand salon was a masterpiece of old-world intimidation: high arched ceilings, velvet drapery, and a massive stone fireplace that crackled with dry oak logs. Yet, despite the heat, the atmosphere felt like an icebox.
Family members hovered in small, tense clusters.
"She’s bluffing," whispered Julian Duca, Roman’s younger cousin, sipping scotch with a trembling hand. "She’s throwing up smoke to cover her tracks. She was a middle-class accountant before Roman swept her up. Eight million dollars? That’s life-changing money for someone like her."
"Shut up, Julian," murmured Victoria Duca, Julian’s elder sister, glancing nervously toward the corner of the room.
In that corner, far from the warmth of the fire, sat Hannah.
She had declined a glass of water. She sat on a high-backed leather armchair, her posture impeccably straight, resting her hands over her lap. Roman stood beside her like an unyielding shadow, his hands tucked into his trousers, his aura so oppressive that no one dared approach within ten feet.
Nicholas Vale stepped toward the wet bar, pouring himself three fingers of rye. His hands were steady, but his jaw was clenched tight. He walked over to Bianca, who was pacing near the grand piano, her knuckles white as she clutched her gold iPhone.
"Aunt Bianca," Nicholas said softly, leaning down to speak near her ear. "We shouldn't let Roman intimidate us. If Hannah is stalling, she might be using an automated script to complete the offshore transfer right now under our noses. As the chief legal officer of the Duca Holdings, I advise we call the federal authorities immediately."
Bianca stopped pacing, her breath rattling in her chest. "Call the FBI? On my own daughter-in-law? The scandal..."
"The scandal of an investigation is better than losing eight million dollars from a public charity," Nicholas pressed, his voice dripping with honeyed urgency. "If the federal regulators discover the missing funds before we report it, you could face personal liability as the foundation's chairwoman. Hannah set you up, Aunt Bianca. She transferred the money using your digital signature key—the one only she had access to as head auditor."
Bianca’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure venom as she glanced across the room at Hannah. "She has my signature key?"
"She requested it last Tuesday for the annual tax reconciliation," Nicholas lied smoothly, taking a slow sip of his rye. "I saw the authorization form myself. If you don't act now, Roman will cover for her, and you will take the fall."
Bianca’s pride, stung by her son’s public rejection and fueled by years of elitist resentment toward Hannah’s modest background, snapped completely.
She turned on her heel and strode across the Persian rug, her heels clicking like gunshots against the hardwood perimeter.
"Roman," Bianca announced, her voice ringing out across the grand salon. "I am calling the authorities."
Roman didn't even turn his head. "Sit down, Mother."
"I will not sit down!" Bianca shrieked, pointing a manicured finger at Hannah. "She used my private digital signature key to authorize the transfer! Nicholas just confirmed it! She manipulated my trust, staged a fake breach, and now she's holding this family hostage while her offshore accounts clear!"
The room went dead silent.
Nicholas remained near the bar, watching with a faint, satisfied glint in his eyes.
Hannah slowly looked up from her lap. For the first time all evening, a faint, sad smile touched the corner of her lips.
"Nicholas told you that?" Hannah asked softly.
"Yes! He saw the tax reconciliation form you made me sign!" Bianca declared triumphantly.
Hannah turned her head slightly to look at Nicholas. "Nicholas... did you tell her about the tax reconciliation form from last Tuesday?"
Nicholas straightened his posture, adopting a solemn, professional demeanor. "I'm only protecting the family's legal standing, Hannah. As Chief Legal Officer, it's my duty to point out that you had sole custody of Aunt Bianca's digital key this week. If the money was moved using that key, the liability rests entirely on the person who held it."
"Except for one thing, Nicholas," Hannah said, her voice rising slightly, crisp and clear as striking glass. "I didn't use Bianca's key."
Nicholas blinked, a hairline fracture appearing in his calm mask. "What?"
"The eight million dollars was not moved using Bianca's digital signature," Hannah stated, standing up slowly. Her velvet dress cascaded down her full hips, her tall, commanding presence filling the space. "The Duca Medical Foundation requires a dual-authorization protocol for transfers over one million dollars. It requires the Chairwoman's key... and the Chief Legal Officer's key."
Nicholas’s glass slipped a fraction of an inch in his grip.
"I didn't move the money with Bianca's key," Hannah continued, taking a step toward the center of the room. "I intercepted the transfer after your key was used to initiate it, Nicholas. I rerouted the funds into a secure neutral hold before your Cayman routing script could finalize."
A collective murmur rippled through the room.
"That's absurd," Nicholas spat, his voice dropping an octave as anger flashed across his features. "You're making up technical jargon to deflect culpability! Roman, are you going to let her slander your own cousin?"
Roman stepped forward, his eyes locking onto Nicholas with terrifying precision. "She hasn't finished speaking, Nicholas. Let her speak."
Hannah checked her watch.
"One hour and fifteen minutes remaining," she said calmly. "And when the Zurich server unlocks, we won't just see where the money went. We'll see the IP address that generated the initial transfer authorization at two o'clock this afternoon."

Nicholas stared at her, his pulse suddenly pounding against his collar. "You're bluffing."
"Am I?" Hannah asked quietly. "Ask yourself, Nicholas... why did you change your cuff links before dinner?"
