Chapter 5 - The Night the Shadows Fled

Two weeks later, a heavy rainstorm rolled over the coast of Oyster Bay. Thunder echoed across the dark Atlantic waters, and rain lashed against the tall, arched windows of the Callaway mansion.

In the cozy, fire-lit sitting room of the east wing, Grace sat on a plush velvet sofa, holding a cup of chamomile tea.

On the rug in front of the hearth, Lily was fast asleep, wrapped in a brand-new, exquisitely crafted yellow and blue hand-knitted blanket—an exact replica of the one her grandmother had made. Beside her lay a giant, soft stuffed white rabbit that had arrived from London the previous week.

The door opened quietly.

Nathaniel stepped into the room. He had removed his tie and rolled up his shirt sleeves, looking relaxed, handsome, and entirely free of his corporate armor.

He looked down at Lily sleeping on the rug, a soft smile touching his lips.

“She’s out cold,” he murmured softly, stepping around the sofa and sitting down beside Grace.

“She spent three hours running around the indoor garden with Nora,” Grace said, her voice filled with quiet happiness. “I’ve never seen her smile this much, Nathaniel. In Ohio... we were always so tired. So scared of the next bill.”

Nathaniel turned his head to look at her. The golden light from the fireplace bathed Grace’s soft features in a warm glow. Without her maid’s uniform, wearing a simple cream cashmere sweater he had bought for her, she looked stunning—vibrant, beautiful, and deeply alive.

“You never have to be scared of a bill again, Grace,” Nathaniel said softly.

Grace looked down at her tea cup, her fingers tightening around the porcelain. “Nathaniel... Marsh Capital declared bankruptcy this morning. It was on the news.”

“I know,” Nathaniel replied evenly.

“Arthur Marsh lost his estate in Cape Cod,” Grace continued, her dark eyes looking into his. “Vivien’s name is ruined in every social circle in the city. People are saying you were ruthless.”

“Do you think I was ruthless, Grace?” Nathaniel asked, his voice dropping an octave, searching her eyes for the absolute truth.

Grace reached out, setting her tea cup on the side table. She turned her body to face him, her heart beating fast.

“I think,” Grace whispered, “that for my entire life, men have taken things from me. My husband was taken by an unsafe job site. My home was taken by debts. Vivien tried to take the last tiny bit of joy my daughter had left.”

She reached out, her soft fingers gently touching the side of Nathaniel’s strong jaw.

“And then you stood up,” Grace continued, tears shimmering in her eyes. “You burned down a kingdom just to show a three-year-old girl that her heart mattered. That isn't ruthless, Nathaniel. That is the bravest thing I have ever seen.”

Nathaniel stared at her, his dark eyes darkening with intense, unyielding passion.

He covered her hand on his cheek with his own broad palm.

“Grace,” he murmured, his breath brushing against her lips. “I spent ten years building an empire because I thought money was the only thing that could keep the world from hurting me. But these past two weeks... watching you laugh in the garden... holding Lily when she reads her picture books... I realized I didn't have an empire at all. I just had a very large, very empty house.”

“Nathaniel...” Grace breathed.

“I love you, Grace,” Nathaniel confessed, the words pouring from his soul with complete, absolute certainty. “I love your strength, I love your gentle heart, and I love your daughter as if she were my own blood. I don't want you to be my guest. I don't want you to live in the east wing. I want you by my side. Forever.”

Grace’s breath caught in her throat. The walls she had built around her heart for four long years—the fear, the insecurity, the grief—crumbled into dust under the heat of his gaze.

“I love you too, Nathaniel,” Grace sobbed softly, a joyful tear slipping down her cheek. “So much.”

Nathaniel pulled her into his arms, leaning down to press his lips against hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their souls together forever.
