Chapter 4 - THE ARCHITECT OF REVENGE

The Mercedes pulled through a set of massive cast-iron gates, winding up a long, tree-lined driveway that opened up to a sprawling, dark-stone estate overlooking the Hudson River.

This was not Michael's flashy, modern Upper East Side penthouse. This was the ancestral Vance manor—a fortress of limestone, slate, and security cameras that looked like it had been built to withstand an army.

Within twenty minutes of our arrival, Julian’s private medical staff was treating Lily in a warm, plush bedroom on the second floor. A kindly elderly doctor administered medicine for her fever, while two housekeepers brought in dry clothes, warm blankets, and a bowl of steaming soup for me.

For the first time in eight hours, Lily was sleeping peacefully, her breath warm and even against the soft cotton sheets.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master library, wearing a dark silk robe Julian’s staff had provided. Downstairs, I could hear the faint murmur of Julian speaking on a secure phone line, his voice sharp, authoritative, and terrifyingly precise.

When he entered the library, he was holding two crystal glasses containing dark amber bourbon. He offered one to me.

I didn't take it. "I don't drink."

"Smart," Julian said, setting the glass down on a mahogany desk. "Keep your mind clear. You're going to need it for what comes next."

"What comes next?" I asked, turning to face him. "Julian, he has the courts. He has the forged DNA document registered with the state. He has four billion dollars and the top legal team in New York. How do we fight a man who owns the system?"

Julian walked over to a wall safe hidden behind a dark oil painting. He punched in an eight-digit code, the heavy steel door swinging open with a soft hydraulic click.

He pulled out a thick, black leather-bound binder and laid it on the desk between us.

"Michael bought the lab technician," Julian said, opening the binder to reveal dozens of bank statements, encrypted email printouts, and wire transfer receipts. "What Michael didn't know is that the lab technician was terrified of being caught. So he kept a secondary, off-site server backup of the original, unedited DNA sequences—along with audio recordings of Michael offering him two million dollars in cash to swap the blood samples."

I stared at the documents, my chest heaving. "You have the recordings?"

"I bought them from the technician two days ago," Julian revealed coldly. "Before Michael could have him quietly eliminated."

"Then take it to the police!" I shouted, stepping toward the desk. "Take it to the FBI! Put him in prison!"

"And what happens if we do that today?" Julian asked, his voice remaining dead calm. "Michael gets arrested for fraud. His high-priced lawyers drag the trial out for seven years. He stays out on bail, keeps control of the company, and uses his media connections to paint you as a bitter ex-wife who fabricated evidence to get a payday. You'll spend the next decade in courtrooms while Lily grows up under the shadow of a public scandal."

I gripped the edge of the mahogany desk, my knuckles turning white. "Then what do you propose?"

Julian leaned in close, his face inches from mine. The smell of cedarwood and power radiating from him was intoxicating, dangerous, and completely magnetic.

"In seventy-two hours," Julian said, "Vance Logistics is holding its annual shareholder gala at the Plaza Hotel. Michael is going to stand on that stage in front of the board, the international press, and the global investment community to officially announce his ascension as sole controlling shareholder."

Julian’s eyes burned with a dark, merciless joy.

"He thinks you're sitting in a women's shelter right now, Maya. He thinks you're broken, silent, and defeated."

May you like

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, black velvet box. He opened it, revealing a stunning, three-carat canary diamond necklace that glittered like liquid sunlight under the library chandeliers.

"We are going to give him three days to feel totally invincible," Julian whispered. "And then, you are going to walk into that ballroom on my arm."
